It has been a long time since I've posted on the forum. I recently made a trip to Japan and would like to share though. We set out for a two day hike up to the summit of Mt. Fuji. From start to finish we made roughly 15 miles. The summit sits over 13,000 ft high, the view is amazing.
We started our hike at the Fujisan bus station and started the 7 hour hike to the fifth station checkpoint. I packed my ULA OHM pretty light, the main bulk came from extra layers of clothing for the higher altitiudes. We did not get good information on the trail up the fifth station however. We packed light on food due to the checkpoints that were supposed to be there during the climbing season. however, we found the trail abandonded up until the fifth station. This left us rather hungry for the last four hours of our hike. Luckly we packed enough to get us through though, and we had plenty of water to see us through.
We made it up to the checkpoint around 7:00pm after starting our journey around 11:30am the same day. Unfortunatly, no camping is aloud past station 5 due to the reservation, so we made due with a bunk at the mountain hut Sata-Goya after eating some rice provided at the small hut. We slept for about 4 hours and woke up in time for the sunrise, around 5:00am. After enjoying the sunrise, we hiked the other 7 hours to the summit. We walked around the enormous volcanic crater and enjoyed some breathtaking views of Japan and the clouds below us. We made it back down to the fifth station checkpoint in only 2.5 hours, and took the bus back to Tokyo to await our flight out. My legs have never been so sore, but the hike was one of the most breathtaking I've done. I'm embedding some photos in this post as well. I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading.
