You'll know if you got good down by how many feathers poke through your material. If you constantly find feathers poking through the nylon, then it was an OK deal. If you find very few, that you rocked this one and I'm jealous! LOL
just wanted to update the thread a little on whether or not the "bloomingdales my luxe" pillows are working good

i have used the TQ for about 15 nights now and still haven't had a single feather poke through and the loft and warmth are just great so far, the gf has used her TQ & UQ the same amount of nights and has yet to have any poke through also

so as far as i'm concerned that was really the way to go if you want to try and make them yourself "on the cheap", and i think the 800fp advertised for those pillows is pretty close if not spot on, pretty inexpensive way to go as far as down is concerned

Excellent work, Boothill and good choice of color on that ripstop.

I'd love to see the pictures on how you made them. Thanks

I just bought a similar down pillow, bought from ebay for use in creating an UQ. I have one major problem though: I've slept on the pillow. I didn't get it dirty or anything...but I really, REALLY like it as a pillow.

Has anyone ever made an UQ that doubles as a pillow when you're at home?

finally got around to using up the rest of the down from the 2 "my luxe" pillows we bought for the TQ & UQ project

    behold........

    "

2oz. of feathery goodness for my noggin.....yea i know.....not a very exciting DIY project.....i did stuff it pretty full of down, and it doesn't "mush flat" when i lay my head on it, so i think it will work great for my hammock pillow

ended up 7"x12" and oh yea........4.5" of loft

    Hi Boothill,

I just wanted to say thanks for the excellent write up of your quilts and also ask a few questions. I plan on doing something similar soon and learned a lot from your post. So how did these quilts end up performing? What temps have you used them down into? Also is there anything you would do differently if you were to do the projects again?

they both work great, have used them on more nights than i can count

my bottom quilt (sewn through channels) is good to about 30º, my top quilt with the karo step baffles has been down to 8º and i think it could go to 0º without much problem

i did the bottom quilt before i really knew much (not that i do now ) and made it a sewn through channel style instead of internal baffles and that is one thing i would change, the temp range for the TQ is much better than the UQ

i am going to be re-doing the UQ very shortly with some M50 fabric and internal channels with the down that is currently in it and am expecting to add 20º of warmth to it just by eliminating the sewn through channels.....fingers x'd

as far as the fabric and the down, i have been very happy with both, going with the M50 just to try and save a few ounces on the re-do

This looks great and gets me excited about trying to do something similar. Having done NO work with down I know I'll have to do a lot more reading and planning but I'm wondering if you (or someone) can give me a head start by explaining what you mean by "sewn through channels" and "internal baffles"?

    Thanks in advance!
