So for all those using whoopie slings - what is the preferred way to connect to the tree strap?

I think most people wrap the hugger around the tree, secured with a biner or dutch clip, then a marlin spike hitch for the whoopie to sit on its knot. Check this out at about 3:20. Actually, just watch the whole thing. Shug knows all....

weaver - lol nice video. if only he had some enthusiasm! So jrb is even simpler by adding the biner near the hammock it allows separation from hammock and also you don't need the toggle and knot.

Caribou - yes, that pvc pipe represents what I did to my strap.

I've almost talked myself into jrb suspension. seems simple enough even for me.

I think that is exactly what happened...

Roger, did you pull the Spectra through the loop on the tree hugger, creating friction between the two materials? The Spectra will literally saw right trough the polyester webbing, so this is one of the few delicate procedures in dealing with hammocks.

Hennessy will certainly send you a new one if you explain your troubles. Based on my past experiences with HH, you'll likely get it free of charge.

The HH lashing is a bit slow, but adding a "Sliding Ring" allows you to adjust the hammock easily without altering the original suspension and it only adds 22 grams. A Whoopie would be a little lighter, but not any easier, and you'll have to change the suspension...

I gathered that HH lightweight models use Spectra. I have used Amsteel in another hammock (Enos) to attach descender rings. The good news that I think you are saying is that unlike Spectra, Amsteel Will work with descender rings? I like the quick adjustment, no knot alternative but don't want go all the way to the hammock with webbing this time.

Thanks to those who corrected me on the suspension pitch. Sounds like that was my biggest mistake.

Just the opposite. There are some folks who think the distortion of the amsteel weakens it. I have not seen any data so far. Tubular braid tends to deform more than solid braid with a point load but I don't think the individual fibers are crushed.

that is correct. there was no hardware in between the spectra and tree strap.

i may have done some of the sawing even before getting into the hammock, i.e. setting it up. It's not a simple thing to hang a hammock with very little pitch in the suspension angle...

I don't mind buying another tree hugger. Since I can't use a couple of descender rings very well with the spectra though, I'm thinking of redoing the suspension. jrb's suspension looks pretty fool proof and light weight and no knots required and would be very adjustable. seems to meet all my requirements. There's more pieces but not that more complex then running a strap to rings on the hammock.
