So here's a question for the forum: I plan on doing mostly car camps over the next several years so im not really concerned about weight. Has anyone tried the clear tarps from tarpaflex? Is the quality (durability) of these better than say you average walmart blue tarp? On their video it looks like it might be pretty tough.
Have you got a link to where one might find a tarpaflex (I guess we can all google it). Thanks!

Beware the greenhouse effect. I've got a clear tarp (DIY) and it really will warm you up with just a little sunlight. Fun tarp though!

...as the large-sized (45L) WallyWorld dry bags, which the semi-clear ones seem to be, it's plenty tough. Unfortunately, without having it in hand, I can't really speak to that. I will say that the dry bag material is able to stand up to the abrasion of being dragged across rough asphalt at twenty miles an hour for a hundred feet or so without giving way (don't ask how I know) or even significant thinning of the material.
I'd be wary of the grommets, though; those tend to give way rather easily on any tarp. Personally, I'd go with grip clips or the cow hitched rock/marble/etc. method for attaching tie-outs.
Cannibal- good looking out, I'll probably break down and get a real tarp when I get to Guam, but the trees and stars are so enticing. It was just an idea I had and for around $10 probably can't beat it without going cuben...

If I'm reading the description right it's saying those tarps are 12/sq yd. I think that's even too heavy for car camping. And I'm seeing $56 for an 8'x10' tarp, with grommets you don't want.
I know I would have to pass on this as awesome as star gazing from the hammock is it's not worth the weight of this thing. I doubt you can get a very taught pitch with it either.
If you are really looking for a clearish tarp and can't go with cuben. I gotta recommend a product called Grip-rite string reinforced poly sheeting. It's about 3oz/sq yd. And can often times be had for free at large industrial construction sites. (you should ask first) I've not actually made a tarp from the stuff but I've been around enough of it to give it some thought. It's rather robust stuff and more or less see through.
