    Brand new

Sort of, I'm quite a hanger yet.

I've been looking over the past few days trying to find out what hammock set up to buy, and unfortunately there is no local store that I can go to for advice.

If, hypothetically speaking, I were to break into the hanger world and purchase a hammock for backpacking, canoeing and general camping in the midwest what would I need and what is a good idea. Typically I camp in the Midwest, however where ever the wanderlust takes me is where I will go. Boundary Waters trip is in the planning stages for summer 2012.

I'm looking for something with a bug net built in. I saw the Jacks R Better hammock review on Backpacker.com and I was intrigued, but I'm not sure that's the way I want to go.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -Scott

Welcome to the Forums from another Canadian. Lots of choices in hammocks. Really depends on your budget and what you'll bw doing mostly.

Newbie to newbie I'm no expert but check jacks r better, warbonet, hammockgear, hennessy and Speer hammock, they have a kit you sew together your self if your budget is tight. If not check out clark jungle hammocks, there pricey but loaded with fetchers, more so than needed I think. Then when you reach info overload it maybe better to just - Keep It Simple Stupid. I know I have been no help at all, but your in the right place to figure it out, theirs a lot to learn. Happy hunting, good luck, and welcome.

welcome, Goldberg. I'm new to all of this as well. I'm getting a Grand Trunk Ultralight to start with. It's only $20 and I figure I can get some experience and experiment with it. I'm also going the DIY route and will ordering fabric and making my own gear in the near future. Plenty of folks on HF from Ohio who you could get with to learn more. Enjoy.

Welcome from Bama. Look for a group hang in your area. That would be a great opportunity to see and try a variety of hammocks.

Welcome aboard from Florida. A lot of good advice already but check out Shug's videos also. When finished if you're not in overload come over and check out the DIY.

Welcome to HF from central Florida!

If you can, check out a group hang. You'll see lots of different hammocks and hangers are usually eager to talk about their set up and let you try it out. A word on hammocking manners and decorum: 1) if a hammocker offers to let you try out his rig, it's impolite to decline - you should lie down for at least 30 seconds and then comment on how it's the most comfortable thing you've ever tried! 2) don't forget to remove your shoes first, or at least keep them out of the hammock.

    Welcome again and good luck!
