I still don't understand why the two 'sides' of the triangle have to be the same length? In all vids/pics of the blackbird I've seen, the side angling up to the end/whipping is longer then the side angling to the shelf.

They don't have to be the same, you can make your triangle any way you want to

Exactly my point. That's why I am asking why every blueprint thus far has the shelf side being shorter.

Ease of construction? I couldn't tell you how changing the 3 side lengths would alter the outcome however...

Its math. The way it is constructed you will always have to sew the hammock side to two sides of the triangle and two sides of a triangle is longer than one. True you can make the triangle sides anyway you want them but there will still be a longer distance. The higher the triangle is the bigger the difference will be.

I am not sure but could be you have fallen for an optical illusion. I did when I started looking at this type of hammock.
If you see a top view of the hammock with bugnet and all it more or less looks symmetrical. What you see is not the hammock edge. It’s the hammock + the shelf. The shelf is material added. On the other side where you head is the hammock edge have been pulled out so it more or less mirrors the other side where the shelf is.

Roughly speaking the black line is the hammocks edge, the red line is the shelf (added material), the blue line is the foot box (triangle added material) when its kicked out.

I could be wrong (I've not read that far back) but I think the question was less about why the length was different to one edge, and more how much difference it makes whether one edge is longer than the other, even if the total length of both edges is the same (?)

I have a Noob question. I've finished my hammock but haven't attached the ridgeline. Does it go inside the netting or outside? I also had the chance to try it out and loved it....so do I really need a ridgeline?

    Cheers,
    Steve

This isn't really the thread for this question, but I'll answer the best I can.

Firstly the rl gives you a consistent hang (sag). You'll want it so that you aren't constantly readjusting your hammock once you've hung it. Also it goes on the inside of the netting as it will also hold the netting up for you. It just comes out the end of the hammock and attaches to the suspension. As for the rl, it should be approx 83% of the hammock body length. But really take your time to find what is best for you. I found that a bit longer is better for me. I like it at about 86%. So try it out.

Thanks so much for the reply. I absentmindedly put it in this thread because this is the hammock I made!

This is according to my view no problem and is one of the special features of the BB design. You just have to be careful that your footbox is not shifted too far to the foot end of the hammock, if you use the plans of TheXringHunt. The plans include imo a flaw in this respect, especially the 9ft and 10ft plans. Otherwise, you can use them very well.

Currently I cannot decide what fabric I will use and see the following two alternatives only:

    - A black 1.9oz ripstop polyester fabric 59" wide which I found here. This would be a cheap solution for a real black bird, but the UK supplier doesn't answer two questions.

    - The other solution would be this 2.4oz 67.7" wide Bundeswehr camo ripstop nylon. The width of this fabric could be nice for a extra wide single layer blackbird, but I would have a lot of fabric remnants if I decide to make the shelf with the same fabric. The left side panel and the footbox will be in any case ultra light mosquito net.

Though I still have no final plan but I will start soon.
