So based on you prior building this thing, what would you suggest a 6'2 fella go with?

When I built mine I made the 8ft version which doese fit my 5ft 8in height and I sleep comfortably. But if I were to build another one I think I would go with the 10ft version just to give me a bit more wiggle room.

Like it but some questions. In the 10' plans the side is 129 inches long, and the body is 147, so how does this make a 10' hammock? is the body shortened when the foot box is sewn on? Also, in your great drawings of the foot box side, there is a drawing of a smaller piece, I'm just not seeing where this piece goes. Is this the shelf? Also, your plans for the bug net show a symmetrical piece, is this correct?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I definitely like the plans, and I'm strongly considering having a go at making the 10' version. Maybe I can use the plotter at work to print the patterns full-size, haha!

If you do some research on a footbox hammock you will learn that the footbox does indeed shorten the side of the hammock. Also that smaller piece is a reinforcement for the footbox/shelf.

Yesterday I gave making the 10' version of this a shot. The pattern is great and it all goes together nicely. Having said that, I would call the 10' version a failure and will be pulling it apart and cutting it back to the 8' version.

The main issue is that the shelf/footbox construction is rendered useless because you are lying so much lower in the hammock (given the hammock is 2' longer this makes sense). When lying in the hammock it is impossible to reach the shelf above you. Equally, there is no need for the footbox, as my feet don't reach into that area when lying on the diagonal to achieve a flat lay. I'm 6' tall.

I can post photos if you like - but they aren't really that great an illustration - it is fairly easy to imagine though.

if anyone else has tried the 10' version and had success I'd love to hear how - maybe I'm missing something...

i just looked back over the plans - it looks like material has just been added to the middle section of the hammock rather than increasing all measurements by a certain ratio. If anyone is keen to make one with a 10' ridge line, I would strongly recommend going off the 8' plans and simply multiplying all measurements by 1.2

edit: errr... though finding a piece of nylon that wide would be difficult. maybe just stick with the 8'...

Philthy, what kind of ridgeline did you use for this. At 6' with a 10' hammock and depending on which whip method you used you should have a hammock about 9' long. That would give you about a foot and a half which sounds perfect. The reason material was added and not multiplied was bigger isn't always better. I made a few of these and did a few different foot box dimensions. I found the bigger it was the more of that side it used up making that side higher and tighter. My last one was 11' long and the foot box was 50 x 50. I ended up taking it apart and going a whole different direction.

I hope you can get all the bugs worked out for your individual setup.
