What type of Zipper do I order?

I am planning on making a bug bivy similar to Patti's on Jeff's website. I want to do one zipper 3-4 feet long on the side in the middle, and then another zipper 2-3 feet long on the bottom. This would allow the door to open in an L shape.

The only disadvantage to this is that I would have to put the bug netting on before I hang and could not leave it open so to speak after I have it one. It would have some weight and hassle with the zipper.

My problem is that I do not know anything about the types of zippers or their ordering codes. What type should I get? If possible I would like one that does not snag the bugnetting as much as others.

I am planning on making a second one similar to the hammock sock I made, but I want to try one like this.

    Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you need a coil zipper. If I were you I would call OWF and talk to the nice ladies there. They helped me a lot when I bought my zippers.

I agree- call OWF and ask about coil zippers.

ALSO- unless you are really good at getting the sliders on yourself, you may want to ask them to install them for you !

I ordered some zippers and they told me that the sliders were hard to install and offered to install them for me. Of course I said yes!

if you go to thru-hiker web site, & click on workshop, you will see an article titled "using continuous zippers". maybe that will give some answers.

A #3 zipper should be good for you. Thru-hiker also sells them by the continuous foot for pretty cheap. I've played just a little bit with both kinds of zippers...it was tougher to get the slider started on the coil zipper, but not really a problem. But if they'll install it for free, might as well let 'em do it.

Why not just use one zipper in an "L" shape, with two sliders?

that brings up another question... can any zipper be used/sewn into an L shape or a curve?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll give them a call and see what they say.

Yeah, how do you do an L shaped zipper? Or maybe a curved one where I only need one pull. I have seen both kind on tents before.

Should ask OWF or AYCE about the L shape, but I think most zippers would work if you make a curve on it, like some tent doors are made. Seems like having two sliders would be worth it so you can change where the opening is. Like being able to reach your stuff w/o completely opening the netting. JMO.

I got my #3 zipper in the mail today. It is a little small, but prefect for this project.

When I was ordering I asked the people at OWF what the weight difference from the #3 to the #5 zipper. They weighed it and it was about 1 oz a foot heavier for the #5. That helped me choose the #3. The #5 would have added about 7 oz to my bugnet.
