Curmudgeon checking in here. I just finished a solo hike here in the White River National Forest. I had planned on an easy hike, turned out to be pretty brutal! In retrospect, I wish I had joined you two and forgone my hike. Wishful thinking, but time constraints would not have permitted it anyway. Trailrider, fantastic trip report, as usual. Even the pictures you had to include of TZQ didn't detract too much! Thanks again for the great report, beautiful pictures and glad you had a great time. I actually think your reports with the great photos at the very least rival the video reports, and in many ways surpass a lot of them. I'll see if I can't get my (short) trip report up soon.

    Hi TZQ and TR42,
Most excellent trip report. What a beautiful place.
The only part i didn't like was reading you two hiked out a day early.
That has to be some kinda backpackers sin isn't it?

Can't wait for your next trip report TR42 they always make me feel like I was there.

Thanks Bob. Want to let you know that my Balance Pockets modded Osprey worked great. I was a lot more comfortable and less tired and sore at the end of the day.

Great looking pics guys. I especially like the last one of the sunset. Both times I've been through New Mexico has been mostly in the dark so it's nice to see some of the scenery I missed.

    Wolf track,
Be sure to pass on to Nate that his Krazy glue repair saved my hike when both of my Scarpa boots started to lose their souls after the first day. They only had 17 years of mileage on them. I'm still in mourning.

Any HF suggestions on replacement boots would be appreciated. I usually day hike in running shoes, but prefer mid-height boots on longer hikes esp. in rocky terrain. Any successful recommendations out there for something under 3 lbs. / pair?

I'm sure you will get plenty of replies, hiking boots usually do. I have had very good luck with Vasque Breeze. I wear the low hikers for work, daily, and the mid height for hiking and backpacking. I have never had a blister and hiked in and out of the Grand Canyon a couple years with a heavy backpack.

Very nice photos and trip report TR42. I am very fond of Ruidoso, and growing up in West Texas, made many trips there. I have day hiked and rode horeseback on parts of the crest trail but never camped on it. The views are stunning. Thanks for sharing

New Mexico is truly the land of enchantment! So far I've only explored a little of the north central part of the state, but I see a trip to this area, the Gila and many others hopefully in the future.
    Thanks for sharing!

Great report and fantastic photography. Thanks for posting this. Our son is at Ft Bliss and hangs in Gila NF. Sending him an email to check out your TR as White Sands is just up the road from him.

    How did I miss this?

    TaoZenQi & TrailRider,

I am very forlorn that I somehow missed this opportunity to walk the Crest Trail down there with you. So few hammockers in New Mexico, really, so few hikers. Well, so few people.

I did the 30 mile stretch of the Manzano Crest Trail this summer south of Albuquerque, but have no photos to post as a bear and rattlesnake ate them...sort of.

Next time, I'm there! Great report and wonderful trail signage. Wait til you see the Cibola National FS's ones up here in the Manzanos! Oh yeah, you can't see them because few exist from the 1970's when last they were posted.

    Thanks, gentlemen!
