    Took a fall...and some new ?'s

Well, I've been working on my setup on the balcony of our house. Two big supports, about 13'6" apart. Slept fine for a couple of nights. tonight, got in, got situated and heard a creaking...hit the floor!

Apparently, my tree hugger strap sawed right through! So, my questions are as follows.

replacement tree hugger strap for a HH explorer deluxe? It's only a week or so old.

    and

Could I just run some eye bolts into the supports and use my carabiners to clip in?

    thanks in advance!

Yes you can get replacement tree huggers, lots of places to order from or can DIY yourself some out of rachet straps.

And yes you could use eye bolts, be sure they are beefy enough to handle the forces exerted upon them (remember can be several times your actual weight) and anchor them properly. Too much support is better than cracking your head on the ground.

well i see a problem with that being the straps give sort of a cusion or spring as it is with your hammock to reduce the shock forces to your carabeiners, now if you just had a whoopie or strap that ran straight from your hammock to the support i would think it would be safer just make sure that the eyebolt is up to the task of holding that much stress and is smooth where the strap will be running.

    good luck

I would want to know how those supports were constructed. I'm picturing some type of column? We had a home built some years back with 4 large columns on the front porch. They consisted of 3/4" wood facing around a 4" steel pipe. The pipe would have held but the wood wouldn't have. Also were the supports square in cross section? The strap may have been cut by the sharp corner. Hang safe friend.

Major buzz kill! Were the tree straps around square lumber? I'm guessing the corners were sharp enough to rub through. But, gees! Less than a week old?!? Bummer!

yeah, around a sharp edge, sliced right through. I'm going to check out the construction...I hope its lumber facing on a 4x4...not a pipe. If not, well looks like I'm hanging in the basement!

Sharp edges will be tough on all fibers; but there are differences in fabrics and strapping in resistance to that shearing or tearing action. Tensile strength isn't everything. Look up the (long) specs for NHTSA-approved automobile seatbelt webbing, or just think of what makes rip-stop rip-stop, and you can appreciate the difference.

I've given up on hanging on the balcony off of those poles...just rough hewn lumber facing over a pipe as was suggested earlier.

It was so nice though! Books like I'm a basement dweller for a while!

Did your webbing have a loop in the end with a binner, going around the post & clipping the webbing back to it's self? If so, it should be "choking" the post & I wouldn't think there would be any "sawing" action going on, even if you were swinging back & forth.

run a wood rasp and touch up the paint

If the corners are nice and square could you tell the wife you are making repairs and run a wood rasp on the sharp edges to smooth them over? I had one stray get very badly cut up on a brick chimney on the corner afterr only one test hang.
