Another IX Thing - multipurpose?

So I started thinking about making a weather shield for the UQ using IX. Not thinking too far ahead, I didn't use sclittlefield's instructions for making an IX UQ since that was not where I was headed. Probably a mistake now that the project is finished and this thing could have been a multipurpose item.

Here are results. Outer shell of Supplex nylon, MARPAT camo. Inner shell of DWR 1.1 ACU ripstop. 3 layers of IX sandwich. 48" x 92" finished size.
And the real shocker - 2lbs, 2 ozs. Too much IX and supplex!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like this might be a truck camping item only. I'm not sure I want to carry this thing in my pack. But I think I can use it as a UQ and/or TQ in milder conditions. Probably will have to reverse the inner/outer shells in wet weather since the supplex is not treated.

Greyson Highlands Festival Hang will be a good test in late September. Nothing like waiting until you get to the woods to find out your mistakes!

Guess it is pretty much bomb proof. I'll let our Scouts try it out. If it survives that, I'll figure out how to best use it for less stressful situations.

It looks like you have about 10 sq yards of insultex there, which will float about 145lbs - so its also a life preserver for smaller people

I'm REALLLLLY interested in two questions:

1. how much airspace you have between your IX layers, and
2. what low temp you can get to with this

Please answer #1 quickly, and #2 when you can!

ive heard two layers will get you to 40 degrees, what will 3 get you to? ( sorry kinda off topic )

I seriously doubt much of the weight came from the IX.

TeeDee made both of us TQ with 3 layers of IX, 50" x 80". both shell layers using 0.9 ripstop, not DWR - not needed. Weight in JRB stuff sack about 20 oz.

I'll bet most of your weight comes from the Supplex - that stuff is heavy.

Forgot to mention that all 3 layers of IX are full width. That makes all 3 layers of IX 60" x 80"

1) The layers are touching so I expect when lying inside the hammock they will be compressed a little more, but as a weather shield it shouldn't make much difference in efficiency - I hope.
2) If used as an UQ, I expect to get to somewhere around 35 degrees or a little lower. Test coming at Mt Rogers, 22-25 Sept.
If it fails as a weather shield or UQ it will be a good TQ for moderate fall/early temps in my usual camping areas south of the Appalachians.
