    My First DIY tarp

so, i finally have my tarp completed WITH PICTURES. it was the first real project i took on, and it came out well. i bought 8.8 yrds of Red ripstop nylon from joann's as well as 10 ft. of poly webbing, 8 D-rings, and two spools of 500 yrd thread.

    Now for the pictures...
    This is my my design...

    Threadbanging underway...

After 4 (non-consecutive) days of sewing, this is the final product laying in the hallway of my dorm.

This is the setup in my backyard with the door half open.

This is another view of it with the door completely closed, (i sewed eye hooks onto .25x1" pieces of webbing to hook the door closed)

Rolled up, the weight is so far unknown, but i wrapped it in the rope from the one side to compress it, it works well.

... and to stay occupied i modified an old down throw to be a UQ. i pulled .5' of the stitching out in the corners and sewed in a shock cord with a cord cinch at the opposite end as well as D-rings in ever corner to clip a rope to.

Overall, it was a great project, now i have to clean all the red nylon dust out of the 237 and oil it up for the next project... whatever that may be...

    Awesome job!

Did you get silnylon, or just the regular stuff? The Joanne's by my house never has sil.

Our Walmart doesn't carry fabric, so no bargain bin ripstop for me, either.

I am looking to do a MYOG tarp, soon. I think I am going to use about the same cut you did, except I am planning to curve each side in.

i just used regular ripstop, i think in the spring when it's warm and things dry i'll make sil-slurry for it... and the joanns by me is like that too, and for some reason walmart both by school and home, never have anything more than thin poly taffeta (which i made into a summer nest for my brother) that's a good idea about curving it in. my friend asked me to build one for him now, but he doesn't do the winter stuff, so i'm tossing around a diamond shape tarp, 11' along the ridgeline, and 10' across. i'll have to refine my sil idea by the time i make that.

    Looks terrific!!!!
Yeah ... my first DIY tarp I used ripstop and when I water tested it it leaked like a sieve!!! Well .... I was dejected but then ordered sil from Ed Speer and my second one was much quicker to do.
I live to learn and failure comes with success and visa-versa.

Nice job on the tarp! Spraying it with silicone waterproofing 'might' help. One thing is for sure, you'll really stand out in the woods

You may have already seen this, but here is a thread where they discuss in great detail how to turn your uncoated ripstop into silnylon.

The basic consensus is that there are several ways to do it and they all pretty much work.

    Really nice looking tarp.

I sure like the design... looks familiar.

Once you get that bad boy all waterproofed up you'll be golden. Looks like nice work. I recommend you get a hold of some shock cord and mitten hooks - I send this with all my similarly designed tarps to clip the "wings" up when they're not needed - it forms a Hex tarp when you do that. Very versatile.
