straight ridgeline & 1/2 whoopie sling

Has anyone tried a straight ridgeline (tree to tree) with the ridgeline running through the center of a short piece 24" or so of line like a whoopie sling and attach one of the ends to the hammock. This would allow you to,
    1. center the hammock
    2.adjust the sag
    3.rigline for tarp.

You would probably need the original rig-line used for bug netting.

You could have the hammock removable from the straight ridgeline as well,
so basically you would have a clothesline with two 24" or so lines on it that can move down the length of it.

My only concern is that the pressure/ attachment point to the hammock on the 24" lines would be equivalent to attaching the short piece (pull handle) of a whoopie sling to the hammock and the part that usually attaches to the hammock is the straight ridgeline.

If this is confusing I'll draw something later.

So you're envisioning hanging the hammock from the ridgeline rather than from the trees? Am I following you right?

If that's it, then your "straight" ridgeline would not be straight anymore - it would become your suspension.

That sounds a lot like the Single Line Suspension (SLS) from this thread.

Here is a very rudimentary sketch of what I'm trying to convey.
The single piece of Amsteel that attaches to the hammock with the SLS buried in it 10-12" would be mirrored on the opposite end of the hammock.

Do you think that the area of my concern will be prone to braking fibers with all the weight being placed on the upper strands?

I believe someone has done this exact thing before and it worked fine.

I would be more concerned about the underside/exit area of you hammock connection on the SLS. It might be ok if you could get that connection to your hammock to line up somewhat parallel to your SLS each time. But each time the angle between the SLS and the hammock attachment line increases, its going to start putting allot of strain on the fibers underneath that exit point (on the SLS) pulling them downward and shifting them back enlarging the exit hole. I would think it would also start weakening the those few fibers its rubbing against.

Take the standard Whoopie Sling. When its setup, the point the bury exits in the loop runs parallel down the line and keeps the exit hole from enlarging. That increases it's ability to grip the buried line. If you take that same parallel loop and start spreading it apart near the bury (exit/entry hole) you can see the fiber start pushing back and the hole get larger.

I'm no expert on this stuff though. Grizz would probably be able to answer this allot better than me. I'm just letting you know my thoughts on what might happen.

Edit: Apollo may be correct. I do recall something like this, but I was thinking instead of whoopies at each end of the SLS, they used the UCR variation but used a different connection on the SLS to the Hammock.

This looks like a UCR on the ridgeline. Someone talked about this before, I expressed the same observation as crackedup about the pulling on fibers at the exit, the OP said he'd seen no issues.

With the UCR you definitely need to pull the tail (e.g. with another bit of small but strong cord and a prusik knot on the ridgeline) to get a full grip on the ridgeline.

But I'd still be concerned about that opening and would keep a close eye on it.

Searched for UCR here, came up with nothing, acronyms are annoying!

UCR = Utility (or Universal) Constrictor Rope as discussed here.
