    Help making whoopies

Ok, so I've looked at all the posts/videos and made a few sets..All was well or so I thought.

I tried last night to make another set out of 7/64 Amsteel. I can make the locked brummel easy enough but I had a hell of a time with the whoopie bury. I could not for the life of me get the line through the bury section. I tried using thin wire, a ballpoint pen insert and anything else I could find around the house. I have a fid but it is too thick. I tried to find a thinner fid on line but he thinest I could find was 1/4"

What kind of professional tools have you used to help with this? I plan to work with Amsteel 7/64 and up in thickness as well as trying to make some dynaglide whoopies. Links to specific makes and models would be helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks,

    ~S~

I use Leader wire from Bass Pro - 0.24 i think. Some guys us floral wire, others the thinnest wire on a guitar - all folded in half. These have all worked well in the past. I have used my wire on even 1.75 zing-it, dynaglide and mason's line.

I think Gumbo could make whoopie slings behind her back, with her eyes closed, while riding a tilt-a-whirl, in a rainstorm. I've watched her do it! Okay, not really but I think she could if she wanted to.
    Her secret:
She uses a large plastic needle (slightly bigger than a needle-point needle but plastic) that came out a little kid's pretend sewing kit. The needle is large enough to hold the Amsteel and not so sharp that it catches every little fiber.
    Good luck!

    P.S. don't forget the taper!!

Ditto on using a wire as a fid. I just have some stainless steel lock wire. It's really thin, sorry I don't know the gauge size. Fold it over and the bend becomes the eye of the needle so to speak.
Now here's the trick, no matter what tool you choose. You need to bunch up the Amsteel over your tool before you'll be able to pull the bury through it. Bunching it up causes the inner diameter to increase. Stretching it out causes it to decrease. If you just try to slide it through without bunching, the outer will just grip the part you are trying to pull through. Also, make sure you taper the end of the bury. It will help to pull it through. If you are putting the end through a needle and folding it over, you're trying to pull more than one diameter of line through. It won't work. Taper it, stick 4-6 strands through your needle or wire loop, fold that over. (A wire loop will grip it so less risk of it letting go on the way through)

Sorry for the long winded explanation.. whatever, hope it helps.

One more thing.. persistence and patience. Getting the end into the bury section can be tough. Make the entry hole as big as you can. When pulling the end in, wiggle it around a lot. I put my thumb and index finger near the hole and wiggle it until the folded over line is in. Once that's done I proceed with the bunching up trick and the line slides right through.

I've never found anything that works better than a loop turner from Joann's fabrics. Oh & always remove a few strands first!
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

For 7/64 Amsteel, I use a big blue plastic needle that I found in my girlfriend's sewing drawer. For Zing-It and mason line, I use a blunted quilting needle that I found in my girlfriend's sewing drawer. Fortunately, she loses things all the time, so I'll never be suspected!
