    Hammock DIY: Annoyances and Gripes

I just stabbed my cuticle with a needle (ouch!) and my fabric scissors have gotten super dull from cutting all this ripstop. The next "sharpening event" at my local fabric store is not for 2 more weeks (boo hoo, sob, sob). My scissors are now just chewing the fabric. How will I go on???

I even checked to see if my dream pair of scissors were available at the store (you know the ones, made through a centuries-old process by skilled technicians in a hot-drop forge from high carbon cutlery steel), but they were sold out. Sold out!!!! I was ready to lay down major bills, and now I can't even do that.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

I am waiting on materials - or I don't have the fabric right now!

I finished last project and assumed I "needed" a couple weeks off - dumb mistake - next time order more stuff before finishing current project

I have yet to sew into my own body - in time I'm sure it will happen.

Go to a sewing store or your local big box retailer and get a Fiskars scissor sharpener. They are around $10-15 but totally worth it.

Instead of a scissors, for most of my cutting I use one of those cheap razor knives where you break off the tip to expose a new point. I lay it out on a big sheet of cardboard. For straight lines I use a metal yardstick or a 8' piece of aluminum u channel that I had in the basement.

This works too. Also a rotary cutter will work well. I think you can buy a kit for around $20-30 with the cutter and the cutting surface. Honestly though anything sharp will work. I'm cheap so I usually go with the most effective and cheapest way.

My biggest gripe are "dull" sewing needles... for some reason, I just forget to change them out... it's not until I either break one, or notice the "pop","pop"',"pop" that's I get around to changing it...

I use a hot knife for Ripstop, save the good scissors for the normal fabric...

I cut with a soldering iron, it works for me. If I did more I would use a hot knife. I do use box cutters sometimes. I always have a problem with the rotary cutters, I rarely get a nice clean cut, always a couple of threads that somehow I miss

This is my fault completely. Either my Bouvier or a fat cat comes and sits on my project. They run when I stand up to remove them, but the left behind fuzz is there.
