I don't know were they came up with 2-4" straps, but I suspect someone not familiar with hammocks was trying to make an educated guess.
But 1" is the most common tree webbing width & in most cases protects the tree just fine.
A lot of slackliners use wider webbing, but they put considerably more tension on their lines than we would ever dream of. They also tend to, or at least consider it a best practice to, put something between the strap and the tree to protect the bark. I don't think we create enough tension with hammocks for this to be an issue.

Looks like an excellent plan in progress for a great weekend! Too bad the drive from Texas and calendar make it prohibitive for some of us in this neck of the woods.

I just came back from Jasper National Park (Alberta) where the rules say to use the tent pad. I had my rig over a pad and my buddy was just off to the side (8 space campground was busy). Five rangers came thru for a tour one day and not one said a word. They should have dealt with the guy on the next pad who snored for two straight nights keeping most everyone nearby awake all night!!

She said that the main issue was that its something relatively new that they weren't used to and she'd get back in touch with me next week.
Here's the part that just gets me. I have been hammock camping since I was in elementary school (it's probably going on 30 years now). It just amazes me that anyone can call this 'new'. Maybe it should be considered more 'mainstream'..

In GA some stay parks you can and some you can't. It's always best to call.

It's against DNR policy in Minnesota for you to hammock camp. It basically comes down to the ranger, but i've had it said pretty plainly to me, even after explaining webbing vs rope, that it's not allowed. Therefore i will always bring my tent as a backup when just camping.

When I called the forest service the other day to ask about hanging in a local campground, the lady told me, YES, and was happy about it. She said to make sure everyone in the group used tree straps. Sounds like a hanger to me, but I didn't ask. I should have invited her out. Maybe she'a a member here. So far, so good here in Oregon.
