i've seen guys search for 30 minutes or more for a stick or misplaced toggle to finish out a marlin spike. i've used'em myself. but here's what i can't figure.

why? especially if you've got caribiners or a ring handy, or just a knot in the webbing or rope itself. if you've got room for a spike you likely have room for a loop.

i'm sure i'm missing something here but i'm not certain what it is.

it's for a closed suspension system, idiot!

but if you have a caribiner couldn't you use that instead, even with a whoopie?

I currently use biners with my whoopies (until I get my elephant trunks).

I found that using a marlin spike works best for me. Less to pack and using small broken pieces of wood works fine as a toggle. Additionally, I don't mind tying a few knots when in camp

I use biners sometimes. You can still use the marlin spike with biners. For instance if there is too much tree strap left where you can't wrap around twice I tie a marlin spike on the biner itself. I like my whoopies as close to the tree as possible not have a long length of tree strap coming off the tree. I generally use biners in colder weather. The advantage to using biners is that the suspension can't fall off the biner since it travels through the biner. The disadvantage is added weight but nano's aren't heavy anyway.

What he said. I tried the Marline spike, but it was just a little bit of pain. The biner is better IMHO. LIke pizza said also, you can do a Marline spike with the biner too, if needed. I just need to get light weight biners. Mine are the stock ones that came with my Skeeter Beeter, and they are heavy.

I love nano biners, and Dutch biners. No marlin spikes for me, too much potential for catastrophe.

And here I respond to a schizophrenic! Sure, you can use a biner or any number of items that might be handy.

I actually use a dollar store biner as a toggle for my marlinspike hitch. This way I have a toggle as well as something to hang stuff from (like extra cordage). Just remember to hang from the marlinspike hitch--do not hook your whoopies into a dollar store biner (less'un you have an affinity and inclination for the ground ).
