    Winter Hiking & Hammocking

Did a write up of what I learned from my past 2 years venturing into winter hiking and hammocking:

    http://watermonkey.net/2011/09/14/wi...ng-hammocking/

Hope this helps out some noobs to the winter. SuperTramp if you're out there I used one of your videos to illustrate a point.

I still have a lot of work in the winter area as far as learning and finding my comfort base weight and gear. I think I have it down but I still need this winter season to sort it out.

    OK I'm rambling again.

Most excellent write up!!! I gleaned a bit of info that I shall put to use. I've not thought of carrying my water bottles upside down! I simply don't carry water when temps are below 20F. I do the camel up method for hydration as I have yet to figure how to keep my bottles from freezing after an hour of hiking. I'd stand there shaking the bottle and saying a few words that I thought would help but never did. It was like a big apostrophe, epiphany, and AHA all at once reading that.

Planning where and how I was going to get water took a lot of effort before each trip last year. We didn't get a lot of snow, so I had to get it from frozen streams - no easy task. I'm also going to pick up an aluminum bottle to toss in a fire as you noted. Like that idea a lot! I have kept water in my pot and thawed out over fire in the morning. I didn't have liquid water to put in with it, so I held the pot higher until I saw some melt so as not to scorch the pan. Real PITA, but all I could think of.

Looking forward to winter and putting these, and many other, tips to use!

    Thanks!

    Good article.

Unlike Joey I don't camel up in winter too often since going to the bathroom is such a pain with all those layers. Typically I blouse my coat up over my hip belt to create extra dead air space between my inner layer(s) and my major insulation. I find this helps keep my torso dry from any sweat which may build up and creates a shelf where I can store my water and canister fuel in a warm place.

Might have to try that upside down trick though.

Thanks for reading! It's keeping me sane through the busiest part of my season <School District Audits>. Unfortunately that means July - October I'm nose deep in the numbers.

That's a great write up. I'm going to try winter camping for the first time this year and this will for sure help me out with diving into it. Thanks a lot!
