    Protecting your bag from thiefs

Since I hammock in an urban park, and have opted to take a convenient, but easily accessible place, I have had to think of a way to hide my bag while I sleep. (I try to leave it inside locked places overnight, but for certain reasons this is not always possible).

I use a HH+SS. At first I would put the bag in the UnderCover. However, this only worked when I didn't actually need the UC, and anyways, I ended up thinking that it might damage it.

One solution: design an UC -- it could be a under-under-cover -- that is designed to put things inside and, perhaps, that can be sealed (though I concluded that, as long as it looks unified with the hammock, it may not be recognised for what it is).

Then, I began taking the left-over rope after tying the hammock to the tree, tying it to my bag, and then bag to my main knot on the rop. This effectively held my bag at the far end of the hammock and out of my way (I hate sleeping with a bag just laying around in the hammock). This works well enough if the bag isn't too large, but it stops me from fully zipping the hammock, and it may disturb the shape of the hammock and, by consequence, harm both durability and comfort.

Another solution, not yet tried, is to take a waterproof bag and lift it up inside a tree, and then tie that to my hammock in a way that means that the whole hammock will have to be untied if the bag is to be lowered. I'm not too fond of this solution since it makes the contents inaccessible, though I can see how this might work in some situations.

    Any tips?

Can you not hang it from the hammock suspension, maybe at the feet end, and use a bicycle or travel wire-corded lock to secure it?

    Maybe something like this:

    Just thinking out loud...

How about a gear hammock under your hammock? Just a mini, no-frills hammock directly under your hammock, clipped into your suspension, big enough to hold your pack. Looking for a picture in the gallery but I can't find one... .

Here is an example of one from someone that might know a thing or two about hammocks.

And you can also find it at JRB.

He means while he sleeps. He also mentioned that he didn't like hanging it like a bear bag because he wouldn't have access to it at night.

I am thinking you somehow wire it to your suspension like Avenger posted. Plan B is a Smith and Wesson, or a Glock patch. Plan C is fill it with snakes.

On a more serious note, if this is such an issue, maybe you should invest in one of those game cameras that are motion activated and have infrared. Mount that to the tree where your straps are so they can't just steal that without disturbing your hammock. My real concern here would be if someone is brazen enough to try and steal your bag, what else are they willing to do? At least if you have a camera strapped to your suspension you will have some evidence if you leave your gear in the view.

Most thefts are opportunistic, and most people are afraid of violence. Of course, if a serial killer stumbles upon me, goes and decides to kidnap me for one of his hedonistic rituals, he'll do it, but I'm willing to risk it. If I get into a fight, it's more likely to be with one of the racoons, but I think I got things straightened out between us: I came during the day once and made a show of force. I spread my limbs, flexed my muscles, growled and peed.

Law Dawg, I've been camping here for three months now and I've never felt threatened. I did wonder once when I heard rustling coming from my spot. Were the racoons at it again? Ah, no, this is a distinctly human giggle. I didn't want them to be at it all night, and anyways, they heard me come in. So I told them to take their time; I had a book with me, so didn't mind. In leaving, they laughed awkwardly and the guy noted that he cleaned up after himself. "Good to know I didn't fully interrupt! I hope you're enjoying the serotonin. "

If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.
