I'm doing a gathered end hammock and need to come up with a suspension. What kind of ropes can I use to attach it to my tree straps?

well Spyderline is a good choice - spectra core with a poly sheath - holds a knot reasonably well and minimal stretch
Would I splice it like whoopies or how would it work
no - you would not be able to splice it
as to how it would work you tie one end to the hammock using one of several techniques the easiest of which if a larks head around the end of the hammock and then tie to the tree straps using for example the Hennessy knot (actually more of a lashing but who is counting)

would something like this work?
No a cord like that will #1 almost always be nylon and #2 will not be strong enough at that size (in that type cord) for a hammock suspension. Generally speaking REI has very little that would be suitable for hammocks, rather they are stocking stuff for climbing, 2 very different activities that require very different sorts of equipment and cord.
There are lots of kinds of suspensions out there, from webbing based (use webbing intended for hammocks) to ropes, carabiners, rings, whoopies and the list goes on. A good thing to do is peruse the vendors listed here on the forum, we stock the proper items for suspensions and have tested them for this sort of application.

i love whoopies and have them on my hennesy i just would rather not order anything since well i dont have an address...in a way im homeless. so something that i could walk into a store and buy would be the best. i use tublar webbibg from REI as my tree huggers and they work great. have been using them for close to 6 months now everyday and they have no wear other then dirt spots. if i could find a place where i can buy amsteel locally it would be cool too and then just make whoopies but havent found a place in Tacoma, WA where i can do that.
there is a West Marine in Tacoma - call and ask if they stock Spyder Line or other similar low stretch dyneema core lines
West Marine #24
3212 Twentieth St E
Tacoma, WA USA 98424
Telephone: (253) 926-2533
West Marine will price match.
Be sure to claim the price from reddenmarine.com. You wont' get the last 5% discount for HF folk, but you won't be paying shipping either, and will save quite a lot.
The smallest I've seen at WM is 1/8". Will they price match an online store like Redden?
