    Anybody hang on Cumberland Island?

Do you have experience hanging on Cumberland Island?

If so, which sites. Any special issues to consider?

    Thanks.

Yankee Paradise is a nice place to hang. I didn't get to see Brickhill Buff. I'm drawing a blank on Hickory Hill but you can probably hang at Stafford also. I'd definitely check out Yankee. It's a good launching point if you want to head over to Plum Orchard or cruise on up to the northern portion of the island.

We spent the last night at Sea Camp for an easy walk back to the ferry. It's a little harder to find trees to use there. You'll want longer straps. I barely got my 12' strap around the huge oak in our site.

I can't think of any special issues. Cool place. Lots of wind (my buddies stayed there the night before I arrived) at Brickhill. I was hoping to go back with them in Jan but I'm not sure if I'll make it.

You can read my blog for more info.

I think there's a trip report thread on here somewhere for Cumberland Island. I've been there once and stayed at Brickhill Bluff. The trees were huge and pretty far apart as Jax mentioned.

There's some kind of neat stuff to check out on the north end of the island (Old church, restored home, grass airstrip w/really old hangar). If you get lucky you might see a sub cruising up the river to the naval base or some dolphins playing tag. Keep a lookout along the road bed for shark's teeth. The road was filled with dredgings from the river bed.

Depending on the time of year the ticks and chiggers are bad. Wear long pants on the trail and/or soak your legs (including socks) with repellant. The little buggers went right through my socks last time and ate me and my hiking partner.

    Beautiful spot, have fun.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping to kayak out to Cumberland over Christmas so, hopefully, bugs won't be an issue.

    Thanks for the help, everybody.

    Has anybody kayaked out there?

I understand its about an eleven mile trip from the campground in St. Mary's. Are there any launch sites closer to the island?

If kayaking, which campsites are most convenient?

Brickhill is the only campsite on the water. Not sure about any closer/easier launch sites.
