    Deployed guys

How have you rigged up your hammocks in the various living spaces provided you?

Just as anyone who has been deployed understands you can be moved around quite a bit and a number of places I have stayed would make hanging difficult without a little bit of planning. I would rather be in a hammock than on a mattress off the local market (bare cots were better). So, how have you rigged your hammocks in CHUs, indig structures of various construction, tents?, etc. If there is AC in a tent you will most likely not find me hanging from some hesscos in the middle of July just due to the heat. If my option is a tent with no AC and hanging from hesscos then thats not much of a decision but I am looking for solutions to all the other common areas we end up sleeping.

    Thanks,

I'm sure Sgt Rock, Just Jeff & others will chime in when they see this. They have posted pictures of their hammocks in the sandbox before.

    Howdy Mike,

    Are you deployed or deploying??

I got lucky on my first tour over in Iraq. My unit had taken over a cigarette factory from the Marines. There was a grove of eucalyptus trees for me to hang in. Second tour I just hung occasionally since we had AC in our sleep area.

I've not hung off a Hesco but see it could be done. On my second tour I took two caribieneers to add to my system so I could quick attach it to places like the wire of a Hesco or the various points on combat vehicles. In training at Fort Polk I hung off all sorts of points on my HUMMWV and available trees or other vehicles. I've never tried hanging inside one of the tents. Unless the base of the poles are down really well, I could see some issues with trying. If I were to make a recommendation to someone trying, it would be to hang off a corner pole and secure to the top of the pole so that the two corner tie outs are providing leverage. Also, if your tents were as cramped as many of the ones I have been in, someone is going to tell you not to take up the space.

As I type that I do remember one of my troopers getting a hammock stand sent to him in Iraq. He didn't use a cot or a bed, he hung a hammock on a stand in the platoon's AO. By that point we had a warehouse we had converted to barracks space that had heat and it made sense for him to do it that way. I still slept outside in my hammock.

I deployed three times as a security contractor and I am looking at picking up another deployment. I am always trying to lighten my load. The only tents I have stayed in for extended periods (not in transit) were the hoop/tunnel tents with a metallic skeleton of semicircles with a single layer of fabric pulled over. Not sure on the exact nomenclature.

I was only ever in GP tents while in transit (Kuwait, VBC, Balad, etc) not that I wouldnt like to find a solution for that, I just dont know if a reasonable one exists considering cramped area and definitely not wanting to be the guy that pulled the tent down with his hammock.

The rest of the time I was in indig buildings ranging from old mil barracks to office buildings like the one shown below. We lived on the edges of the damaged areas where the structures were still "intact".

Anyone have any thoughts on an expedient manner to hook onto concrete?

In one place we had rooms that had fairly high ceilings and we scrounged wood to make lofts to increase usable space, I was thinking I could probably build a frame but relying on 'finding' building materials isnt satisfactory to me. Ideally I would like to be able to come up with a small kit that I could use to attach to most any surface or situation I encounter since no structure is the same over there and we get moved around quite a bit.

Thanks for the info, I will mull it over and see what I can come up with.

I think I know that building. In 2003 we secured the site for the Regiment to eventually set up the HQ. It is right off Route Pluto isn't it?

Yes it is. Should have had a number of "high rise" structures in the same area with elevations of roughly 12 stories. Not surprised someone would recognize it, that area was pretty distinct in architecture.

I did a bunch of drilling and anchoring to concrete over the years as a construction guy.

You'll need a hammer drill, a masonry drill bit and a few concrete anchors( a specifically designed screw/bolt, that inserts into the hole you drill and expands as you tighten it) Or epoxy glue and threaded rod anchors. Available at most big box supply houses or concrete supply stores.

And the concrete wall needs to be thick enough for accepting the anchor.
Or thru drill the wall, and put a plate on both sides, with threaded rod and nuts.
If you need more info, let me know.

I remember being impressed by the blast hole. We were chasing looters out of there for about a month early in 2003.

Depends on the wall and how well its made.
Technically the book will say 3/4 or 5/8 inch x 5-6.
But the wall's construction has more to do with the actual strength.
Hollow core wall, solid wall, pre-cast, block, and thickness, all effect the holding power.
If you can thru-bolt it, that is probably the best.

Upper management probably frowns on soldiers drilling random holes..
Post some pics of your digs and we can probably come with some ideas.

ps thanks for serving our country!
