Ever hang in the Okefenokee Swamp?

Has anybody ever hung in the Okefenokee Swamp?

Are the platforms hammock friendly? Any favorite launch sites? Any special considerations?

    Thanks.

Yes. 2008 March spring break. Camping is mostly on platforms so you would be tying off to square post members or rafters if you can reach them. Might want to check with the rangers first. Bug net is required except for Dec thru early March, depending on when spring hits the swamp.
You must make reservations. During spring (Mar thru April I think) you are usually limited to 2 nights.

Missed the "special considerations" part. Carry all your water is best advice. Swamp water is full of peat/plant fiber. Gators! Dry conditions this year have concentrated the gators in canals and main streams. Unless we get a lot of rain over the winter, the swamp will be very low on water and gators will still have to concentrate. Have not heard of any problems so far but dozens of gators in small areas is not something I care to paddle through. And I am used to being around them, but not in large concentrations. Big fire during July and August did major damage to western side of the swamp. Some areas could be closed. Again, check with the reservation folks.

Thanks for the help. I'm considering a kayak trip there over the Christmas holidays.

Great post. Camped at Stephen Foster Park as a teen and canoed the swamp. Would love to get back and hang there.

The fires are still burning, we are still sending crews up there. I wouldn't worry too much about gators as long as you aren't there during mating season (bad idea).

That would be late Mar and April based on the stuff going on during my last trip.
