    Mini Figure 9's

OK...inspired by Dutch and the fact that I hate tying knots I made thr following "Mini 9's". They weigh in at a backbreaking 3 grams each. I made in my machine shop but certainly doable at home with some extra time. Measures about 1" x 3/8" before sawing and bending out the slot. The mason line loop attaches to the tieout. Orange line, which is from OES and same as Speer No Tangle, is held captive by the stake loop on one end and a stopper knot on the other. I had been using some of the micro plastic cord locks, but these seem more durable. You could use Dutch Flyz in the same way...just use the 2 holes and forget about the "J" used in ridgeline tightening. First pic is before locking the line. Second completely locked in place. Would also allow tarp retensioning from inside...

    Such sad words.

Still, your home made Figure 9's are pretty cool.

Those look cool. If only I had a machine shop and didn't have REI so close I would have to try to make some myself.

Did you mill them? Do you have a drawing?

I sawed to size these prototypes. I used the mill to drill holes and make the small notch at the bottom. I sawed and then bent the slot for the final wrap. Finished with belt sander. Made from some 1/8 thick 6061 T6 sheet I had lying around. I am not planning to produce these for sale.

As you can see these could be easily made DIY with drill, hacksaw, and round or diamond file. And your local Home Depot or Lowes probably has a rack of aluminum stock. If I made more I would go even thinner since there is not much load on the side tie outs. I would expect getting them to 1 Gram each would be possible. I use Dutch Flyz for the ridge lines.

The attached PDF will give enough info to make.

They actually wound up weighing about 1.8 Grams and are really handy since I hate tying knots. Sorry Knotty
