This forum is awesome and I am jumping in, ready for my first hang this weekend. The temp is expected to be in the high 70's with lows in the high 50's.

I made a DIY gathered end, DL with an opening for a pad (pics later today). I plan to insert a thermarest, slightly deflated as an underlayer.

Will a 40 degree sleeping bag be sufficient for a top layer? What other suggestions does anyone have?

You might want some sort of pad around your shoulders. If you can imagine anywhere your body touches the hammock with weight you need insulation. Your bag will be fine everywhere it's not trapped between your weight and the hammock material. Shug has a video addressing it, sorry I dint have a link for you, but he prolly reply to this thread anyway.

Southpaw is right about the shoulder issue.

If you have sufficient under-insulation you will be surprised at haw warm a 40 deg bag feels.

Conversely, if your back (kidneys, really) is cold you will be surprised at how cold the SAME bag feels. An easy way to augment the Thermarest is with a cheap blue pad oriented across the major axis of the hammock. But many here have opted to cut and glue blue pads together for better coverage.

And for luxury, nothing beats an underquilt!

Another option would be a Poncho Liner Under Quilt (PLUQ) to accompany the pad or even a fleece travel blanket, gathered, whipped and hung under the hammock. That should give you the side-to-side coverage & if your TQ/sleeping bag tucks up around your shoulders I'd think you'd be fine.

Hey, at least it won't be cold enough to freeze to death; unless you get soaking wet. Stay dry, stay warm! But don't forget a hat.
