Question about the 83% ridgeline rule (of thumb)

I am trying a couple of different things in my next DIY hammocks. I am using 83% of the hammock length as a starting point for setting the ridgeline length.

However, as many people do, I could cut the ends such that the left and right edges of the hammock are shorter than the center. Alternately, I could sew in a footbox which would have the same effect of shortening the sides relative to the rest of the hammock.

My question is, should I base the ridgeline length on 83% of the center of the hammock or on 83% of the shorter edge of the hammock.

Assuming that we use either method of shortening the sides by 6”, the difference in ridgeline length would be 5” depending on which calculation method was used. What about it all you prolific hammock makers?

I made my hammock as a parallelogram. I didn't actually measure my ridgeline before installing it. I just made it adjustable, and the length I found most comfortable just happened to end up being 83%. This measurement is of the hammock layed out flat, from whipping to whipping, so it's the usable area of the hammock. Likewise, I measured the ridgeline from the same spots. I don't know if that's right or not, but if it's not, I don't wanna be right, because it's darn comfortable.

The one and only time I bothered with measuring, I stretched the hammock out, and measured from suspension to suspension. It was an eye opener, as I was dealing with a manufactured hammock, and the effective length was nowhere close to the advertised length.

Nowadays, I just whip out a whoopie, and adjust 'till it suits me.
