    Determine weight of ripstop material

    Odd question here, but decided to make my own hammock. Stopped by the recommended fabric store in the area to look at ripstop, it was all 1/2 off but ended that day so I just bought two colors at 4 yards each 60" wide.

    Here's the question, they didn't know what the weight was of the ripstop, 1.1 or 1.9oz? Is there any way for me to figure out what the weight of the stuff is I purchased? I weighed the material and 4 yds of it on my digital weight scale showed 0.8 lbs, I checked both and got the exact same reading.

    I hope someone knows how to figure this out, because I sure don't? Thanks everyone.

    Looks like they're both 1.9oz per yard. The 1.1 will be much thinner than 1.9. Most fabric shops like Joann's has 1.9. I've never seen 1.1 in any of the fabric shops around me. If you saw 1.1 you would never mistake it for 1.9.
    I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

    Yup, 1.9

    144inches x 60 inches = 8640 sq in
    8640 sq in = 6.666 sq yd

    .8lb = 12.8oz

    12.8/6.666=1.920 oz/sq yd

    For reference: 1.9 oz is how much one square yard weighs. So, if you have 4 yards long and 60" wide, you have 4 * (60"/(36"/yard)) = 6.66 square yards.

    The weight is 0.8 lbs * 16oz/pound = 12.8oz

    So the weight per square yard is just the total weight divided by the total # of square yards you have:

    12.8oz / 6.66 sq. yd. = 1.92 oz/sq. yd.
