Killarney, Ontario: La Cloche Trail Sept 11-17 '11

Frosty Don posted a couple of videos of his hike two weeks ago on this wonderful trail. Supertramp posted a video of his hike in May. Please check them out. I went last week for six nights solo, but no video camera.

This is a great park on the north shore of Lake Huron, popular with canoeists, campers, and hikers. The trail is quite popular in autumn. Booking interior hiking campsites is a bit of a formality; I stealth-hung two of the six nights because the campsites were either too far to hike in a day, or a ridiculously short distance apart.

My summer incubator reached its limit as the nighttime temps hovered just a few degrees above freezing. i had to supplement between the double layer of my Blackbird with my T-shirt, puffy jacket and sit pad. Then I was okay.
But the summer burrow topquilt was great. guess i need a three-season incubator!

Don't have a lot to say about the trail that hasn't been said. It is fairly tough, with lots of ups and downs. I sometimes came to a wall of rock, looked around for a blue trail indicator, and it inevitably pointed straight up. But it was all doable, and the views and ever-changing topography were really magnificent.

Fantastic pics Sturgeon! I really have to make it out to your end of the country again, and this time, bring my hiking kit.

BTW, thanks for posting pics of that WB edge tarp, I've been eyeing up one those critters! How do you find the coverage?

    Cheers

+1 Me too. It is certainly a gorgeous area to hike in. Although, I get the urge to dig out the climbing gear with those rock walls and cliffs.

    Cheers

    Thanks for your kind comments.

@ Supertramp You should go in the fall; lots of places that were wet in your videos were dry when i was there. Nights were still cool though (4 or 5 C).

@Bloomgorge Sorry i don't have a GPS. Just followed the map and the blue trail indicators. But I'd be glad to answer any questions about hiking times, etc...

@Callahan There was a big thunderstorm night of the 11th-12th. The Edge kept everything perfectly dry, but i had advance warning (lightning) that rain was coming, so i tightened up the tarp and put it lower and closer to the hammock. I think it's really a great tarp--a good balance of weight and coverage. I may sell my WBBB, but I'll never sell the Edge. Actually that pic is the morning after the storm.

@ Fronkey Don't be jealous. You live in Minnesota! Bear Central! Land of awesome "north shore" scenery, the SHT, etc (I should know, I grew up just north of the Minnesota Ontario border in Thunder Bay) That said, i must admit that Killarney is someplace really special, different from the rest of Ontario to the south and north of it. Wish I lived closer; it's a six hour drive from Toronto.

By the way, there's a second bear in that picture, at the extreme right. When i saw it, i got spooked, thinking, where's momma?, but I guess in fall she's already moved on...maybe those who know more about bears can tell me if that's true.
