"The more I carry the happier I am in camp; the less I carry the happier I am getting there" - Sgt. Rock
A few weeks ago, my bottle of deet spilled in my lumbar pack and melted the handle on my knife, my camelback water bottle, my wallet and destroyed the silicone impregnation on my water filters bag. I started looking it up to find out why, and it didn't take much reading before I decided I will never use it again.
That's pretty cool! If only they could figure out how to make a confusant that I just put in my pocket and not have to wear on my skin.

What do you both do about misquotes then?

Pure citronella oil works great and doesn't have any of teh issues DEET does. Been around many years.
Try a permethrin based spray. Its tough to find, but leathal on ticks. I think Sawyer is the only company to make it for hikers, spray pump bottles. Do not apply directly to skin. Spray it well on clothing and let it dry. Last about 5-6 washings. Many name brand companies with "insect Proof" fabrics are weaving time release Permethrin threads into the fabrics they use. Its common for military and workers in South Americas. I find it better because I don't need to spray it on skin. with tat said, if skeeters are hungry enough, I've watched em die trying to feed. DEET or no DEET.
Army issue works great on removing paint from your vehicles window sill, especially driver's side (before AC was common, we rode windows down). Did I date myself?

I like to spray DEET on my hat and clothes. Using it at a bluegrass festival years ago and having it on my hands then pickin' the mandolin.....the DEET made the finish on the back on my mando neck bubble and blister.
