    Hey tr42,
What am I missing in the Section 19-20 elevation pics. We go from 9200ft at the end of Sec. 19 to 5600ft at the beginning of Sec. 20. Do we bring hanggliders for that descent?

Thanks for catching that Jim. I don't know what happened there. I didn't figure you guys would want to do the hang glide from the end of sec 19 down to the beginning of 20 where the Catwalk is, but I somehow included it.

Since the trip would start at the Catwalk, we wouldn't be doing any of sec 19, just 20 and 21. I have edited the post above to reflect that.

Spent all day today looking over Hikes A and B. Trying to figure possible daily mileages, dependent on published reliable water locations and possible camp spots.

Then figuring shuttle logistics for each. I'm afraid Hike B's shuttle logistics are too much. I'm not a shuttle logistics guru by any means. I just figured driving distance from ending TH back to starting TH.

For Hike B the fastest route is 235 miles. That is unacceptable.

For Hike A the fastest route is 110 miles. I wouldn't mind that.

Before we spend any more time considering these routes, let me know what your thinking is.

Talked with Toazenqi, he suggested hiking a section of the GET and then try to link up with another trail that will loop us back or close to our starting point. So I'm going to look into that.

I think I came up with a good alternate plan, per Taozenqis suggestion.

Hike the 30 mile Section 20(dark cyan in the picture), then take the official 13.8 mile High Country Bypass(dark blue line in the picture) along Turkey Feather Creek out to Willow Creek Campground and hiway 159. About 44 miles total hike, but I've shown other options as well.

Then it's just a 31 mile shuttle back to the start.

I have a .gpx file of the tracks in the picture if you want it.

Left to Right, Profile reads West to East

Left to Right, Profile reads North to South

Take a look at these elevation profiles and see which direction you think would be the better hike of the loop.

I did the same thing with Section 21. We can start and end at the Gila Cliff Dwellings and not have to shuttle at all.

I want to make one observation I'm noticing about these GPS tracks from http://simblissity.net/get/ They don't appear to be actual recorded tracks from someone on the ground, but rather, tracks drawn in a program like Garmin Mapsource. I say this because, from looking at these tracks in Google Earth, they are way off in places, and I think also that's the reason for the spikey looking elevation profiles.

While researching the Grand Enchantment Trail, I came across this thread. Did you ever do this trip? I'm interested in finding out where it's possible to hang along it.

Dayhiked last winter along the Middle Fork of the Gila, and would really like to return when there is less snow and I could do some backpacking.

    Hi Joan,
No, we have not done any part of it. This was a thread I started to try to generate interest and possibly draw those more knowledgable about the trail into the conversation.

A lot of people can only do a 4-5 day outting. So I tried to determine doable input and output sections where the logistics work.

I'd still like to do a hike.

I've learned not to try to plan these things so far in advance, at least not to try getting commitments this far out. Things change for people at the last minute. It's easier for people to commit with only a few weeks notice than it is with 5-6 months.

Hi and thanks for responding. Yes, it sure it hard to plan and get interest in a longer trip like this. Hope you all decide to go someday, it looks fantastic.
