    Iowa Hang

Is there any interest in having an Iowa Hang. My trip last weekend to Yellow River pulled the idea from the back of my mind to the front of it.

Yellow River is a beautiful little forest, a few miles from the Mississippi in NE Iowa. I have hung at all the back country sights but Brown's Hollow would probably be the best for a group hang, although Camp John Schultz is my favorite, albeit dry, site. It has 25 miles of hiking trails, public water at the ranger station and information station. The back country sites (4 of them) are free. I think the pay sites are 9 bucks a night but I have never used them.
I have hiked here many times in the last couple years and it is an ideal weekend hike. I have used Yellow River as my testing ground for my gear before taking it on the longer hikes on the SHT.

My girlfriend and I would be very interested in said Iowa Hang!
She lives in CR and I am near Chicago.
Great Idea (It would be my first overnight if we did it relatively soon)

I'd be interested although my next month looks kind of tight.

YRSF is a great place, I get up there 5-6 times a year.

If we can't get a group, just let me know when you're heading up there sometime and maybe I'll tag along.

I'd be interested if the timing works out. Yellow River is a nice place for a weekend getaway.

All I have planned for the rest of this year is the Northern hang. As long as the dates don't conflict with that, I would mind the 3 1/2 hour drive to do some hanging in Iowa. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

October 1, 8, and 15 have potential for me. Let me know what others think would be the best. Thanks for bringing up the idea. I would really enjoy getting away for a change.

As fate would have it, I'm burning a week of vacation at beginning of October. Actually, I will be off work from 9/30 to 10/10. I'll probably be off the at least one other weekend as well. I should get my finalized schedule tomorrow. The Northern Hang is the weekend of 14-16 so thats off the table. I still have a couple more weeks of vacation to burn so if November would work better, I can do it any weekend. For fall colors, I imagine the the weekend of the 10/7-10/9. According to the Iowa DNR Color peak for that area is the last week of Sept - first week of Oct.

Don't be shy here, What dates are folks interested in?

Also, most of the back country sites can be reached by very short hikes if you don't wish to put on many miles, by utilizing fire roads. The Brown's Hollow camp site has a parking site that is not listed that is on the fire tower road. It is a minimum maintenance/fire road but its not too bad. Like wise, I have left my car at the fire tower itself a couple times with out problem, which is a very short hike from Camp John Shultz. The place where I parked in the Yellow River vid I posted is a short, albeit steep, hike from Camp Glen Wendel, which is a beautiful little site with a pond.

There is well water available at the ranger station and the information station, in addition to a couple ponds and the Paint Creek. The John Schultz campsite is dry and quite a hike to the nearest water. The trail map shows a water feature there but it has been dry for years. Heffern's hill is dry but less than a half mile from paint creek.

The fall colors are fantastic in the whole area.

Depending on dates, I'd like to stop through an Iowa hang. I'm from Manchester, IA, and I know the beauty of NE Iowa firsthand. We will be headed down to Strawberry Point in the next week or so, and after that schedules may have an opening.
