Pillow yes or no if yes which one and why

Hoodie rolled up. Then on cold mornings, it's warm when I put it on.

Currently using the Grand Trunk convertible travel pillow. Doesn't compress very much. In fact it's down right bulky, for backpacking, but it's really comfy. One of those luxurry items I like to bring along when I have room.

I also got an inflatible pillow that came with a cheap fleece sleeping bag. Take it when size & weight constraints prevent the GT from fitting in the pack.

+1 on the exped. I have never liked the super soft down pillows, they never give me enough support. The Exped is the right size and easily adjustable by adding or releasing air. Packs down to nothing. One down side is it is a bit noisy against the hammock nylon. I put it in a small microfiber pillowcase. Now it is quiet and super comfortable. I like that is is asymmetric in thickness so I can easily rotate if I want more support.

Homemade pillow, stuffed with synthetic fill. Light weight and can be constructed to your specifications. just MHO, $.02 and all that.

I'm a side sleeper so I absolutely need a pillow or a wake up with a terrible crink in my neck. I've even gone as far as rolling up my dirty jeans and sleeping on them (belt and all) when I forgot my pillow and needed *something*.

I have a pillow that I got from Chicken Wings giveaway. It's 1.1 ripstop stuffed with Primaloft I think he said. It's not thick enough for me since I'm a side sleeper I need tall and firm, but it's great when I'm on my back and reading a book in the hammock for hours on end.

I'm thinking about opening it up and putting some memory foam in it so the foam is on one side and the primaloft takes up the other. I think I can use it then.

IMHO, any well made pillow will do. It just needs to be good components put together in such a way there is nothing to scratch you up, and appropriate firmness for how you sleep.

My home made pillow is some 1.9 ripstop scraps stuffed with IX that was I got second hand (someones failed UQ attempt). It's huge, but firm, and warm. The Chicken Wing pillow made me realize what size I really need to be.

I use an AHE snoring cub pillow. It's only 3oz and provides just enough support in the crook of my neck when on my back or side.

Yes I have to use a pillow. I sleep on my side and lately I've be rolling around in every which way. I use one of those spandex pillows filled with the tiny plastic beads. It squished in every direction, and becomes thick or thin. I love it, but not so great for backpacking since it doesn't compress. If i had to pick one for back packing I would go with the grand trunk one.

I use a Teton Sports (http://www.tetonsports.com/index.html) compressable pillow. It's a big 18"X18" when it's out of the sack, and covered in brushed flannel. Nice and soft, and I don't have to do a balancing act to keep my head on it. It's bit big for backpackers, and at .nearly 14 ounces, too heavy for the ultra light crowd, but for me, I'll take it every time. :-)
