    First Hang - Spotsylvania, VA

I am hooked and will never sleep on the ground again.

We had a group of 5 families get together for an camping trip this weekend. In preparation for the trip, I had spent the past few weeks reading all of the great article on the forum and then making my own hammock.

Friday started out interesting with flash flood watches and downpours. At one point in the afternoon, I asked my wife, "What's wrong?" The only reply she could give me was, "I'm trying to remain positive."

There is a happy ending to all of this, the rain stopped, we saw lots of stars, ate well and most importantly slept well. Ms. Chef slept in the tent with our girls and I slept in the hammock. The sleeping was very comfortable, but very warm & steamy. I made a DL, gathered end and used a thermarest pad and 40 degree bag, straps for suspension and a poly tarp. I ended up with the bag next to me and no cover. The temp only got down to 65, but was at about 95% humidity, quite steamy.

All in all it was a peaceful, comfortable sleep, just warm. BUT NO back pain!

I'll post pics later. Thanks to all for your information, it made it much easier for me.

Has your wife suggested a hammock for her yet? It won't be long.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Not yet, but surprisingly she never laid in it. Maybe next trip.

I'm from Spotsy! I live in Western Maryland now. Were'd you hang at down there? Used to be lots of open woods to tromp around in. I grew up near Fawn lake and ran all over those woods. Now there are houses and guards and all back there.

I graduated from Spotsy High when it was right down from the court house. I went there for a visit last year and got lost. So much growth and change, it's amazing to me. I remember when the mall opened and Silver shopping center was a farm!

Sorry, memory lane trip.... just curious as to where ya'll went for the camp out?

    Hey Badchef,

My sister lives near Spotsylvania. Did a nice day hike over there last year on a civil war battle field walk.

We stayed on some friends land out behind Spotsy HS off of Towles Mill Rd.

I remember the farm and the Sheraton, my grandparents were one of the original owners at Lake of the Woods. Yes it has grown.
