    Indiana Winter Hang..

Has anyone ever done a winter hang in Indiana? I have tested my gear in the Spring Summer and Fall......but not the cold winter......

What are some of the things to look for, think about, and do that normally would NOT do for the other 3 seasons....

I got caught in a late season 8" snow storm, on Browning Hill, after the sap had already began running in the pines. Tower Ridge Road and most of Nebo looked like a giant woodland game of Jackstraws. Ended up having to go all the way down to Kurtz and sneak out via SR58.

I also cross country skied, with a full pack, out onto, and then of course through, the ice and into a wildlife pond, off the Patton Cave trail once as well.

I'd avoid doing either one, although neither event put an end to the particular outing.

Oh yes. Another time camped at the WP close to the Hinge @ 10 degrees I burned the tip of the toe on one of my hiking boots in the fire.

And what was the most valuable lesson learned? Sleep with a water bottle or on top of everything else, you'll be thirsty too

hey jerry,...a group of us are planning on getting a yurt for a weekend at pinckney rec near ann arbor in the winter time to use for eat and warming up if you want to join us for a winter hang? there is also a back country campsite about 4miles into the woods we plan to trek to and possibly stay one night at. by the looks of it, you're about 5hrs south of the place. I'm sure TZBrown will be with us and he teaches cold weather camping to the scouts

nope, kevin (dblcorona) will probably set it up sometime in december. i'm sure it'll be just as fun as the rifle river and with being closer to home it'll have it bonuses as well. i'm sure we'll eat well, laugh and pretend we're warm in 0F weather.

I've made it out in below freezing temps a few times, but I only have one real winter hang under my belt so far:

I can't wait to do it again this winter.
    Don't alter my altar
    don't desecrate my shrine
    My church is the water
and my home is underneath the shady pines
