I am 5 ft 11 in. How long should I cut the ripstop nylon to make a gathered end hammock?

I believe the general formula is 71" (your height) + 24" + 6" (for hem and channels on ends) = 101". There is also the opinion that the long you make the hammock, the more comfortable. But, length is just one consideration; width is just as important. I wouldn't consider anything less than 60"; more will allow you to lie at more of an angle across the center line of the hammock.
Having said that, I'm 5'11", weigh 210 lbs., and the cloth for my favorite hammock was cut to 10' x 66". The end result was 9.5' x 64"
I'm 5'10" and have made over 40 hammocks, maybe 25 different ways. I've come to the conclusion that for me, and most folk I've made hammocks for of roughly similar size - 126"x64+/-" of raw fabric (before hemming, end gather, etc.) makes the perfect hammock.
YMMV (your mileage may vary), but I think you'll find it's a good starting point.
