birds nest at the beginning of a seam

Admittedly I am a new thread injector but have sewn much to practice. However, once I get the tension right for the application, each seam begins with a birds nest. The remainder of the seam, even starting and stopping again, looks good but the start is almost always looped and crossed.

Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Keep the tag threads top and bottom long and it should keep them from getting pulled back in and creating a nest... You can also try holding the ends of the thread with a little tension as you start the stitch.

In all liklihood you are starting too close to the edge of the fabric. The is particularly true if you have an older machine. Start with the edge of the fabric even with or a little past the end of the presser foot. To lock the seam start go forward a very few stitches, reverse and forward again. What happens is the needle pushes the fabric edge down into the plate hole and bunches things up. If you start farther into the fabric that does not happen.

Check you feed dog pattern. You may or may not have feed dogs in front of and behind the needle hole. Ideally you want them in both places. But if you have them only behind you have to engage the feed dogs on the fabric before you start. If they are only in front you have to manually encourage the fabric to move past the hole when you first start.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."
