Pavilion rented for Sat Oct 15 for MAHHA activities

Just an FYI to all MAHHA people. As usual we've rented the large pavilion at Gathland State Park for Saturday. It's a day use shelter where we have our potluck dinner and people usually gather there on Saturday for any special activities. We pay $75 to rent it so PLEASE feel free to gather there and use it as much as you want. A ranger may come by and ask you if you've paid to use the shelter and the answer is YES!

The park ranger emphsized that it is a day use facility from 8 am until sunset so we always start the potluck dinner earlier in the fall to stay within the rules. Although we're usually cleaning up after sunset. We'll be starting up the charcoal around 4:00 pm.

I did not pay for the alcohol permit so please keep any legal beverage out of view. It's never been a problem in the past, so we'd like to keep with this tradition.

The park is a "Pack Out Your Own Trash" park and we'll have plenty of trash bags on hand for clean-up. If anyone wants to volunteer to pack out all the aluminum cans for recycling, we'd be most appreciative. I pack out the several large bags of trash in my truck.

FYI, the park bathrooms with running water near the pavilion will still be open.

Dogs need to be on a leash when in the park and at the pavilion.

Info for new people: You'll want to bring your flashlights and something warm to wear for the hike back to the hang area. Donations for the raffle and dinner is $10 per ticket. This donation helps pay for the pavilion. Try to bring exact change because we're not exactly professionals at this. If you want to donate any camping gear for the raffle, feel free to bring it and put it on the table. Your contributions and kindness are much appreciated!

If you are interested in doing any special activities at the pavilion during the day or if you want to request an activity, post your ideas and suggestions on this thread and we'll see what happens.

Two activities in the works for Oct. MAHHA right now. Feel free to add more . . .

    1. Geo-caching: On another thread Adia posted that she will be doing some geo-caching with Little Miss and others. She invites all to join-in. Look her up at the hang and she’ll give you the where and when of this activity.

    2. Trash Pick-Up: Also on another HF thread, Hawk-eye suggested that Hammock Forums hangers have a great opportunity to give back to the areas where we hang and hike by picking-up trash. I couldn't agree more! We have been holding our hang at Gathland State Park for quite a few years and I think this is an excellent idea. Our group is always very good about hiking out our own trash and cleaning up after the potluck dinner on Saturday Nights. Now I’d like to suggest that we take it a step further by hiking out as much trash as we can during our time in the park and on the AT.

Please help with this project by bringing a small OR LARGE trash bag with you to the hang and . . .

    • Picking-up trash anywhere in the park during the hang.
    • Picking-up trash along the AT during your pre and post hikes.
    • Helping us hike out the trash that accumulates in the established campfire rings in and around the Crampton Gap AT shelter on Saturday and Sunday during your hikes to and from the parking area.

It will be nice to give back to a place that we have come to enjoy so much each year!
