Smile The "Not-So-Stealth" Hammock Stuff Sack

What up everybody! The "Not so Stealth" Hammock now has a stuff sack.

A stuff sack is, in and of itself, a fairly simple project, but when you need to make a stuff sack to fit the stuff going into the stuff sack the project becomes a little more involved. The difficulty has more to do with determining the proper fabric size than the actual sewing. Luckily there is a little know secret that I will share with you to determine the starting point.

Alegebra! Okay now don’t be frightened or alarmed. Your high school math teacher was right. It will come in handy later on in life and you will use it outside of school. Now that my secret is out of the bag we can get started.

You can also see pictures and more of a write up on how I determine the overall starting dimensions of my stuff sacks ---> here

Great job with the video. Timing is great as I was trying to figure out how big to make a few stuff sacks.

It looks like I made a slight miscalculation when putting together my video and formulas together for the stuff sack material calculation. I am sorry. I hope I didn't screw up anyone's stuff sack because of this.

After some discussions with another forum member and some testing (and much soul searching), I think I have the issue corrected. It seems I neglected to add the overlap of the fabric to the top of the stuff sack to get an accurate height for the material. To do this you need to add 1/2 the object diameter back to the material height. I also don't trust my math skills b/c it has been a LONG time since I have taken algebra (and I don't have a Dear Aunt Sally to excuse) so I put together THIS SPREADSHEET to help me calculate the material dimensions.

I tested this out on a real world application (custom stuff sack for a thermarest pad) to prove to myself that it will work. The stuff sack fits like a glove.

Soooo, I just wasn't diggin' what was on the tube tonight...or maybe I was just hearin' a piece of ripstop callin' me. Regardless, I gave chickenwings stuff sack spreadsheet a try...worked great!! Looking back, I should have rerolled my PLUQ and compressed it down a bit smaller...but now I have an excuse to make another...

    Here's the obligatory photo...
