    Ok, more tinkering.

Reading around the web, there are lots of hints about using these feet. I tried the method in threadsmagazine I linked above, and I found it more difficult and less successful than what I was doing previously. so I went back to that.

    1. Place material under the foot with the edge lined up where it would normally run, and sew a few stitches. Remove material and trim the thread long 6".

    2. Using the long threads, guide material into and through the foot. The threads are tugging on the head of the material, making it easier to draw it through the foot.

    3. When you have it looking good, drop the foot and start sewing. Its a bit of a guess to know how much material to allow into the foot, and managing that and keeping the stitch straight is not easy, but I have gotten better with practice.

Here is some of my better stitches:

and here is an area where I ran too lean on material in the foot and then corrected:

The other very worthwhile hint I found was to use a rotary cutter to trim the edges of rip stop. This is a brilliant idea, using a 45mm rotary cutter with a craft cutting board and a heavy straight-edge gave really smooth edges and definitely improved my result. I have a Fiskars rotary paper trimmer 45mm, and it does a great job on the rip stop:

PhotoHiker that seem looks great. About how tall is it? I only have the one hemming foot which is about 1/8". I do have an adjustable hemmer that is quite the contraption and I haven't played with it enough to figure it out. It should work the same as the other foot but I wasn't able to get it to work the one tine I used it.

Rotary cutters are a must have in my opinion. I need a longer straight edge too. I had been using one of my wife's plastic straight edge along with an aluminum square from my shop to get the length I need and it is easy to nick the rotary blade on the square causing it not to cut well.

Hi egrant. Thanks. The more I practice, the better it gets...

The hem is about 6mm, so slightly less than 1/4" The machine came standard with a 2mm hemming foot, way too small, even less than your 1/8" but they have an accessory pack with a 4mm and 6mm foot in it.

This is the Janome 6mm foot. Janome uses a clip-on foot system, so no upright on the foot.

    Here's another hint.

If you run into trouble on the edges of the rip stop with the material jamming in the footplate of the machine, try changing the needle.

I've been bumping against this problem for a couple of days, and was doing some practice today for a flat felled seam I had to do - everytime I reversed and ran back up to the edge, I'd get a jam. Changed the needle, and everything is running sweet.
