    CCF insulation questions

Is it generally agreed that an under quilt is considered warmer than using CCF? How cold of temp is CCF warm enough down to? I already own a ridge rest and a thermarest self inflating pad.

Also, is it just the shoulders mainly that need this insulation on the sides or is it the whole torso, & thighs as well?

What do people think of the 1/8" ccf 'yoga' mat that is sold cheap at the dollar stores and Walmart? I was thinking that perhaps it could be added as insulation on the sides to add to a typical 1/4" blue CCF or Ridgerest which isn't wide enough.

Perhaps by cutting it in half length wise into and duct taping these strips to each side of the blue CCF pad? Or perhaps underlying it perpendicular across the blue pad like a T so that the ends fold up around the shoulders?

No, underquilts aren't considered warmer. But they are considered more comfortable, require less 'squirming around' in the hammock to stay on top of, and don't have the same condensation issues as pads.

Pads work fine, though. You just have to get used to using them.

You'll want pad coverage under your whole torso certainly, and under your legs in colder temps. Less is required under the legs for most folks.

    The T arrangement works well.

I agree that UQs are more comfortable than a pad although I still use a pad on occasions.

    Pad pros... cheap
Pad cons... bulky, tend to slide around in a single layer hammock

Just Jeff's page has a lot of information on insulation. You should take a look here:

    Exactly what I was thinking!

Just Jeff's Hammock Camping has a section on pads:
    here
that talks about Sgt Rock's Wing Pad, and Rick Frost's Neat Frost Pad which is like the T idea I was considering. Also an overlap pad and ideas for pad extenders. Excellent!

So anyone tried the cheap 1/8 'yoga' pads for the sides ? Would they be enough or should I stick with 1/4" blue foam on the sides?
