    Sewing machine?

What are some of the sewing machine's being used by DIY crowd what should I look for as far as options, stich patterns , speed, capacity, etc..
Also what thread should be used with the diffrent material or do you use the same thread for sewing everything?
    Thanks for the help.

I'm using a 1974 Sears Kenmore 1803 (158.18034). Really nice machine, built to last. I picked it up on Craigs List. I'm pretty new to the DIY scene, but so far I've made a few stuff sacks and a gathered end hammock for my 5 year old son. I've used 100% polyester thread on everything.

What is this sewing machine you speak of? We use thread injectors here. Sorry. Couldn't help it. I have a 1973 White in a wood cabinet. I need to get it cleaned and tuned, but that thing is a brute. Sews from lace to denim and canvas. It has multiple speeds, but to make different threads, you have to switch out cams.

I have been using a Singer 9420. It was my mom's and my sister just had it sitting in storage.

I am about to pick up a vintage White 628 and see how much I like it.

Check my guidelines thread in my sig. Others have found it helpful. If you are looking for a used machine brand is not a real issue. What you are looking for there is reliability.

Normal good quality 100% polyester thread is fine for most home use DIY projects. If you are looking for commercial sales you are in a whole different ballpark.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    i use a singer stylist 533

but as far as what options you need......about all you need from what i have found from all of my DIY projects (UQ, TY, tree straps, stuff sacks, tarp doors) is something with a straight and zig zag stitch, with the ability to change the stitch length for different applications if you want

i've used this thread for all of my projects, seems to be really good stuff
