    Three Degrees of Separation

Last night, I was visiting another Scout troop who has 25 scouts going to Philmont next summer (plus 5 scouts from my troop including my son), and I was giving a presentation on Lighweight Backpacking. Included in the material was a discussion and handout I had created on suggested purchases for the Big 4 (not a hammock discussion). However, on the "Sleeping Bag" page, I divided the data into sleeping bags, and top quilts. I also listed wieghts, prices, and suppliers. As I have a Hammock Gear Burrow, I pulled it out to show the scouts. Of course, everyone was impressed.

As I finished the presentation, Phillip, one of the other troop's leaders (who is a friend of mine, as he went through the troop I now work with 25 years ago, and his parents still work with my troop) stepped up and announced that the owners of Hammock Gear were his cousin, that he had just spoken to them (during my presentation) and that they were offering a discount to the scouts in our group. (Thanks a million, Jenny!)

As it turns out, Phillip's wife is Jenny, cousin and namesake to Throwren. I was stunned. Having known Phillip and his family for years, I almost felt like I was nearly related to the Hammock Gear family. Then again, the way they have treated me as a customer the past year, I guess they had already made me feel like family.

Me-Phillip-Jenny-Jenny. Three Degrees of Separation. What a small world.

Jenny and Adam, FWIW, after seeing the quilts, I have several scouts/parents who may be interested in picking up one of your Top Quilts. I will keep you posted!

Amazing how all life is connected, closer than most of us think.

    Pretty cool.

Very cool story. It always amazes me how small this world is and how in some way or another we really are all connected. So does this mean you'll be getting the family discount.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Once upon a time I would have been amazed.......

But anymore I have come to believe that the fraternity of outdoor participants (as opposed to those who simply shop at REI or LLB) is smaller than you might think. So many of us are "cross-polinators" - that is, we participate in several outdoor activities. Many of us have been doing so for more years than we care to admit, and as such have rubbed elbows with many folks who also love the outdoors.

I had a 3DS moment about a year ago via boating friends reconnecting me with a guy I had guided whitewater with 30 years ago. It is indeed a small world!

I am putting together a similar presentation for my Scout troop that I work with. Any chance to get a copy of what you have prepared as another source of information? Trying to get our Scouts to break the car camping umbilical cord

Sure. Just remember that this is a Philmont oriented list; that is to say it is not focused on hammocks, but around standard tent camping. Please PM me with your email and I will send out the document. Also advise if you want it in MS Word format or PDF. If you wanted to create a hammock oriented list, most of us here could do that based on our experience on the forum.
