Permithrin is sold in the camping section at Wally World...Repel is the name it is sold under...I buy Sawyer, myself....it is NOT Deet...it is made to be sprayed on clothing which then must dry completely...it is excellent against mosquitoes...it's not that they land on the material and die...they just don't land...I spray my tarps, hammocks, clothing and hats every spring...OUTSIDE! It is very effective...there is no odor and it does not damage plastic like Deet can.

Good point! DEET can really mess up watch crystals, take your watches off when you put that stuff on and don't let any of the liquid or spray get on them. Cell phones and probably glasses too. Once it dries on your skin that danger is over... I think.

So then, unlike Deet, there is no worry about Perm damaging or weakening hammock bodies, webbing or ropes?

    Not that we know of.

Last I knew they also sold some sort of natural insect repellant in the camping section at wally world. I think it's Lemon oil and Eucalyptus Oil I think. Been a while since I've seen it but if you're worried about chemicals it might just be your ticket!

Never heard of that type of problem with Permethrin. I don't think DEET, after it has dried on your skin, is any worry to weakening hammock bodies, webbing or ropes either.

Right, it's just a problem if it is sprayed on certain materials, esp. at high concentrations. I often spray it on cotton clothing anyway, though I tend to use low concentrations.

That Eucalyptus oil has a powerful smell. Not really bad, but STRONG and long lasting.

You're a little confused. You spray it on the fabric and it dries, it doesn't remain a gas.

    > its not the smell that would bother me, its the long-term health effects

That certainly sounds ominous! What are these long-term health effects, anarky321?

    Check these two pages:
    Permethrin:
    and DEET

I'd worry more about DEET than Permethrin, though permethrin may be labelled a neuro-toxin it is frequently prescribed at a similar dilution for cases of skin mites(aka scabbies, crabs, etc.) and as part of the treatment is liberally applied all over the body like lotion and allowed to dry... I wouldn't want to do that all the time for sure, but whatever minute amount you may get after it's already dried is nothing compared to that.

nickelanddime, your reference seems to indicate that permethrin is completely safe unless you bathe in it every night, drink it or spray it up your nose. I wonder what the long-term effects anarky321 referred to are? The can I have here doesn't mention any.

can someone recommend a brand of Permethrin? after scheming for hours i came to the conclusion that just spraying the bottom would be the easiest and more importantly cleanest (in terms of extra stuff) way to go

    thanks

edit: anarky doesnt know WHAT the long term effects are, he just has a strong feeling that there are ones -_- but then again nothing in life is risk free and your going to die in the end anyway...
so anarky decided to step over his chemo-phobia in the name of stealth camping
