    Minor mods to Exp Ultralite

    Through necessity really....
Problem 1. After 10 hangs the std suspension outer casing gave way, gently delivering me on my arse....it didn't like the pressure point that the rap ring setup applies.
Problem 2. Knowing which way the velco entrance is with the snakeskins on.

Both issues fixed simply by upgrading to the smallest climbing grade rope I could find, with a hard wearing outer casing in two different colours. Coloured for the entrance & black for the head end. Over 10 hangs on this mod already....no sign of wear whatsoever, heavier than std though, which is a compromise I can live with.

Hope that helps someone thinking about using rap rings on their suspension in the future.

not trying to pry but could I ask what you weighed? I just didnt think the rope would break within its weight limits.

Nice solution to your problem. My son and I both use the carabiner and ring setup right now for our suspension, and I daily check the ropes for wear, most especially where they go through the rings.

At some point I'm likely to switch over to whoopie slings made from Amsteel rope...probably right at the moment that I see signs of wear on the standard ropes.

    No problem NewtonGT,
    I weigh around 100kg, which is......about 220lbs.
Rope didn't actually break, just the outer protective cover failed & slid down the inner core.

    Thanks Owl,
I too am looking into whoopies.....even bought a length of amsteel, so might try it on my tarp ridgeline first, & see if it grows on me.
Still prefer this set up at the moment though, full lenth of suspension rope adjustability for short or long distances between tree's. Ease of use, & the slightly larger diameter rope helps when setting up with cold hands & numb fingers !

I used the same set up when I first got my deep jungle.

I was ordering some other stuff and figured I would get a set of whoopies cause they are cheap. The whoopies are even easier to use and if you have amsteel, you can make them any length you want.

It's also really easy to swap out, only about 10 minutes to do them and a new ridgeline. Probably take me less than half that time to do it again.
Learning how to tie a couple knots never killed nobody. First ones I ever learned were pretty hard but they've kept my shoes on me for the better part of 45 years.

    I hear you arbot,
Made some up yesterday & played around with them....will give them
a run this w/end if i can get out.
Once you find the right tool for the job, they're easy to make,
although I did end up get a blister on my milking thumb....

    Thanks arbot.

Just adding to the first post...
Took a second look at the rap rings & their finish left
a lot to be desire...so I smoothed the lips & ridges down with a small file
& then faced the rings ridges to the outside not in the pinch point.
Perhaps that was the reason the HH outer casing failed.

All good now though....addictive pastime this hammocking.

Yeah, the Hennessy ropes are not designed for use with rings. In over 10 years of Hennessy use, I just haven't wanted to change from Tom's standard set-up. No rings, no clips, just the hammock and standard accessories as instructed for set-up.

Except for ONE thing. To solve the "Which end is which?" question on a closed-up hammock, I just stitched a simple "H" on the Treehugger that is threaded onto the head-end suspension rope. Sometimes the simplest thing works!
