    Porch mode to tent mode

    noob ? here.

Is this a common scenario? I'm going to be doing some backpacking in the Rockies. I would like to set the tarp up in porch mode during the day, and then go back to tent mode (like http://www.jacksrbetter.com/DSC00321...eb%20Small.JPG) at night, to keep the heat in.

    Does that make sense?

Any gotchas for switching between these modes. I'd like to have the porch mode open during the day for lounging around, cooking etc...

Then, go back to tent mode when night sets in.

    Thoughts? Comments?

No sweat. Just take out the poles and tighten the guy lines. Or if you attach the poles to the tarp, pick up the foot, lay the poles down, then tighten the guys. Easy peasy, and I'm sure lots of the veterans here do this on a regular basis.

Standard fare for me if I've got the hammock/tarp up during daylight.
I probably leave it in porch mode overnight about 75% of the time during the 'warm' months out here.

    Thanks guys!

We are camping at around 11,000ft, so it's going to get pretty chilly at night. Hence my thoughts of turning it into tent mode. It will be my first time doing the hammock thing (usually use tents).

    Yeah, but....

The views are awfully nice at 11,000'; be a shame to not open your eyes in the morning to the sight of purple mountain majesty. At that altitude, the prevailing winds should be fairly stable. Setup with your tarp's back wall to deflect and leave the other side in porch mode. Depending on how strong the breeze is, this is usually sufficient with the right sleeping insulation.

Porch mode is my default. I love wakin up to the view. Like the other fellas have said , droppin the porch is easy if you have the need to hunker down.

I prefer porch mode (or a variant there of) as often as possible. Only ever had to fully hunker down once so far as the rain was swirling around and having pullouts on each side helped to give the tarp a more roomy feel.

Is it bad that I stayed in my hammock instead of going back in the house during that storm?

And if the wind says calm though the night and you have adequate insulation then at that elevation the stars will never have been brighter in you life. Best seat in the world for star gazing is reclined in your hammock. And at 11,000' they should be spectacular. I think I am going to kick back in my rig on the back patio tonight for just this reason.
