Is there any way around that? What if a HF member were to send you a "gift"? No one needs to know that you sent a money order/travelers check the week before

HF isn't an appropriate place to discuss tax evasion or other illegal activities.

That's allot of cash. Makes the extra i have to pay in Canada seem like nothing. Keep up the good outlook.

Being as it is, hanging as a hobby is inexpensive compared to my previous hobby sailing.
Or for that matter kayaking (had a P&H Quest, sold by now)
Or what about motorcycling (had an XT600 Yamaha motorcycle, sold by now).
Hanging gives me the best value for the buck that I have ever had.

Oh yeah..... Bikes(that's motor bikes), now thats a expensive hobby here. When a new bike lands in Denmark, it's taxed 180% of it's new value!!!

At least theres not a "tree hanger levy" yet

I recently purchased a used item from a fellow HF member and had it shipped from US to Canada. When it was delivered via UPS I had to pay an extra $50 on a declared value of $100. The duty/tax was $20.00 (not unexpected or unreasonable) but the fee for the customs broker was $30. The fee was 50% more than the taxes.

On the bright side in regards to your taxation I understand your country is often ranked quite high as one of the happiest place to live and that in the 2008 report on the Human Poverty Index (which measures things like life expectancy, literacy, long term employment ) for 2008 you ranked #5 out of 22 countries that were studied. Canada was only #8. Cold comfort maybe, but at least you have some great insulation to keep away CBS caused by TWS (Thin Wallet Syndrome)

Anyhow, I feel your pain , brother, just hang loose (or tight or whatever) and hang happy!

Make sure that used goods you recieve is labeled clearly: USED GOODS, it can sometime save you some $$$ from the vultures.....

But it's not as great as it usually is reported(unless you ask the people with the top income areas)... but it sure sounds good in the news paper when we are supposed to be some of the happiest people on earth(which funnily also is one of the counties that gets most antidepressants pr inhabitants)
