    Lost my ring buckles :(

    Hello everyone!

I hadn't been out in the hammock for about a month and when I opened my kit up (way in the middle of no where) i found that my tree huggers and ring buckles were gone!

I just tied up the old fashioned way and had a great night.

When I came home, i looked everywhere and came to the conclusion my lost gear must still be on that beach 800km in the middle of the pacific where I left them in August!

Just want to ask you guys what you'd do.
Order new tree huggers? New rings? Try something new?

I'm leaning towards none of the above. I got by just fine without any extra suspension equipment. Can I continue to do so?

replace the tree huggers - better for the trees. After that you are on your own. ;-)

Get a complete suspension from jacksrbetter and set up as shown there. Every thing is attached and no chance of leaving the tree straps behind! :-)

    Just an option.

I guess the name "tree hugger" sounds like it is better for the trees, but after a night not using them I didn't see any damage on the trees at all. Not even a mark.

I get that the weight is distributed over a larger surface with tree huggers, but we aren't talking about a lot of weight here.

might be the time to upgrade to whoopie slings and the new Dutch Buckle instead of using the ring buckles

Watch GrizzlyAdams's videos before choosing a replacement. It's well worth the 30 minutes, as he covers just about all the innovations over the past few years.

You're right about that, a properly tied rope suspension won't damage the bark of most trees (some soft-bark trees might be the exception.) But short-term, definitely nothing significant.

However (and there are several threads on this in the archives) the general school of thought is that using tree huggers helps demonstrate that Hammockers on the whole are Leave No Trace compliant, and will gain us all a better reputation with park rangers and other environmental officials. The problem is not with us diligent, thoughtful folks: it's with the idiots who will bring screw-in eyebolts to public parks, stick them into trees, and get ALL hammocks banned.

That said, I love the simplicity of tree straps over rope. I've got good knot skills, but I find that the straps are just dead simple. I keep ring buckles on my loaner hammocks, and have whoopies on my personal rig. Love 'em both, but the whoopies are lighter and frankly... WAY cooler!
