Great post. We are seldom rational beings. Yet when I see folks come on here and say "convince me" I just kinda shrug my shoulders and think "why?"
To me it is all about the comfort. My wife used to get terribly sore and stiff legs from sleeping on the ground. There isn't much to her. Now that we are in the trees she and I are both very comfortable and always get a good night of rest when out and about. We go to a winter retreat with college friends and rather than sleep in a heated building with mattresses, we hang outside. Our friends think we are nuts.
Perhaps, but we are comfortable nuts, and crazy cozy. I agree that cost, weight, etc. etc. is not the reason to hammock. To me it is all about the sleep. Hard to put a price on that.

you are wrong about one thing..... you can get lighter with a hammock if you know how to
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
Sounds like we all are affected to some degree with Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS). I can't walk past any sporting goods store without stopping in for a look.
Hello friends my name is Wile E Coyote and I have GAS.

Now when you give her your gear, you have to use the tact of "here have this great hammock and I will get a new one, not as good as the old one, but only the best for you".
Stupid is as stupid does...
Done some really stupid stuff in my life, seriously stupid stuff. Anyone here that hasn't? That said, getting my poor sore tired bones (mostly because of that stupid stuff) up off the ground is not one of them. That's all I got to say about that...
I know how, it is just not important to me. I paddle mostly, can carry 1400 lbs. (how many grams is that?!!?!!) and still have 6 inches of freeboard. Comfort, however is critical. When I occasionally backpack, then I am weight conscious.
I still am amazed at the occasional GD that comes on here and tries to "out minimize" the hanging option. To me, the comfort is the critical issue.
