    What's this stuff

There's been a lot of talk about insultex and a similar foam used in packing. I haven't seen either of these things with my own eyes, but we have a lot of this stuff at work used in packing (see pics hopefully below). It's like a closed cell foam about 1/8" (.35mm) thick. It seems to me it could at a pinch work as a light pad. Does anyone know what it is and has anyone ever used it?

well, you're right, it does appear to be some kind of closed cell foam. One test it to dunk it in water and see if it absorbs any that will tell you if it is closed cell or not. Another test would be find a cold surface such as a concrete floor and try to feel if it provides any insulation by placing one hand on bare floor and the other on a piece of foam on the floor. I believe this looks like the same stuff that my T.V. came wrapped in.

Looks like polypropylene sheet foam. I've used for cozies and such. I've never tried it for a pad but if have access to waste sheets for free, it would probably work for light duty. It is not very durable. ( rips, tears and cuts easily)

That's the stuff. If it's less than 1mm thick, it's probably about the same as the foam in Insultex...

Yes, it's fragile (which is why IX is quilted to 2 layers of scrim!)

Add a layer of that between you and an UQ, you'll really feel the warmth... and since it's not breathable... probably get damp except in real cold/low humid weather..

I put a layer of similar stuff in my Poncho Liner UQ... it helps...

I have seen miles of this stuff pass through my factory. It is indeed thin and closed cell. As others noted, it is flimsy, and does not breathe.

It is free if you re-use it from packing. Experiment with it! And let us know your experience.

Thanks, I will! Seeing as the stuff is free and will get thrown out anyway I might try doing something with it.

Laminate flooring underlay is the same type of foam, but much thicker. The really thin stuff is what IX is made from.
