    Amsteel Blue 7/64 stress?

    Hello,

I have some DIY Whoopie Slings I made out of Amsteel Blue 7/64 that I ordered from reddenmarine a few months ago and its showing signs of stress. I'm a small guy, about 155lbs so I don't think weight is the issue. Anyone ever see this before and is it safe to hang with it in this condition?

    Thanks,

    KC

It looks that you've been pulling the tail back against the bury, a temptation we all give in to, since we can do it one handed. Try not to not do that; scrunch the bury by pushing the ends together with fingers of two hands instead.

You can work with fingers, milking, and even with a pick to even out the pitch of strands in the braid. If there are gaps, as you show, there are also extremely tight areas of braiding that can be loosened to fill them.

But, as long as the strands are not torn, you are fine. You have about 200lb of strength per strand, starting with about 1600 lbs.

What DemostiX said. The pics look like the strands have good integrity with no actual wear, tearing or fraying. As long as all of the strands are intact and are all pulling in the same direction, you should be alright.

    +1 for both replies.

    Mine look like that also.

    Quick story:

When I first made a single amsteel 7/64 whoopie I took it to a friend's house and declared that it was "unbreakable".

So he loops it over an engine hoist mount in the garage, put his boot in the loop and starts bouncing on it. After some frustration he lifts his support legs and starts to really get going....

Things start falling out of the garage rafters and crashing on the floor...his wife yells at him couple times and finally he stops.

    That stuff is TUFF!!!

yes normal at this point in a whoopies life BUT i suggest once year whoopie replacement for me because if use one set of whoopies i'll hang on them 50-75 times in a given year...cheap replacement insurance.

I had the same issue and posted about it here. The above posts area correct. To fix you whoopie just re adjust the tension in the braid. After doing this make an effort to pull inline with the suspension when adjusting not perpendicular to it. That was my problem.

I too had this problem. Today I was messing around with my gear and found that I unintentionally was inserting a finger between the 2 strands and was pulling the loose end nearly perpendicular without even noticing it. I spent some time tonight adjusting on my 2 whoopies that were showing this same sign of wear and now the braid looks almost like new.

Mine frayed a bit when I made mine. It held me OK. I wasnt even able to bury the end. I struggled so much i just spliced it back through the rope and tie a quick release knot to keep it where I want. It seems to work well for me.

    I also have a story.

Soon after I got my first shipment of amsteel I made a few 2'-3' whoopies for practice. I then took them to my father's boat shop and made the same "unbreakable" claim.

The guys in the back took that as a challenge and started in with the engine hoist... After the sling laughed at a 25 then 50 then 75hp outboard motor, my dad decided once and for all he was going to break it. So he backed a junk ski boat into the shop & rolled over the hoist. I attached the sling to one of the rear tie down loops & we then proceeded to lift the back of the boat off it's trailer, engine and all.

    That was a fun day.
